On Friday
afternoon about 26 AHQ associates gathered beneath the Tree of Knowledge at the
Australian Defence Force Academy. The weather was windy & cloudy and we had
to keep close to hear our guide.
Our tour
leader was FSGT Glen, supported by CPL Daniel, who was loaded
up with our Laundry Bags for distribution.
Glen has served 36 years in the Air
Force and now is a reservist who looks after Work Health & Safety. Glen
emphasised that this Academy is for students who are studying University
courses as well as undertaking training, drills and learning about life in the
military. Approx. 900 trainee officers are studying each year-Army, Navy and
Air Force. University of NSW, Canberra provides one of the best student: instructor
ratios and hosts international students as well as post graduate studies.
Most cadets
have recently finished their HSC or equivalent school exams. As well as
studying there is also a variety of sports available – from Rugby, AFL, swimming
and even lawn bowls. There is even an obstacle course over the pool! Physical
fitness is necessary and learning to march, use military equipment and
undertaking leadership programs are part of the extensive training for the
cadets.
The Parade
Ground is used for graduation and is regarded as ‘sacred ground’. The flags
represent the countries of international students who have been involved at
ADFA.
Everything
cadets need is at the Academy. A prominent, necessary feature is the Academy
Mess - the floor space is one of the largest. The foyer has Australian and
Regimental flags and displays of gifts, weapons, paintings and crests.
There are lounges, computers and games areas & a magpie that flew around
with us and seemed right at home.
The table layout for meals is fairly
informal but there are occasions when there is a formal Mess with President and
gavel and ‘calls to order’.
Breakfast is for ½ hour with 300 at a
time – 2 divisions at a time. Imagine
the washing up!
We also saw
the Commandants’ photos – pleased to see two women in there –as well as the
Australian Honours awards – the medals awarded for service as well as higher
awards.
This was an
interesting tour, focusing on the cadets and their lives here. Thank your
particularly for FSGT Glen for his time and excellent information.
Many thanks Jo for your report.
.....
Till next time... keep spreading the word and happy stitching!
