Commemoration for Women of the Armed Forces of Australia - Thankyou

Dear Janet,

This year, women came from all over Australia to participate in a first of its kind Service at the State War Memorial , Kings Park, Perth on the 8th of August 2026, commemorating the Women of the Armed Forces of Australia. This amazing service was the vision of our current Vice President - Jen Riches AM, who also took the lead in coordinating the event.  Despite the terrible weather conditions in Perth the service was attended by over 200 people.

I am often asked why we needed this service and function.   For the Servicewomen's RSLWA Subbranch commemorating women from the armed forces of Australia is vital to ensuring that Australian military history accurately reflects the contributions, sacrifices, and leadership of all personnel. Historically, the service of women was often obscured, restricted to auxiliary roles, or their truth omitted from national narratives. Women now can serve in 100% of Australian Defence Force roles; they don't need to leave because they have been married or are pregnant and are a foundational component of national security.

Your contribution of three Aussie Hero Quilts enabled a presentation to occur during our function after the service to three of our centenarians. These incredible women served either in the Australian Women's Army Service or the Women's Australian Auxiliary Airforce during World War 2. It goes without saying the beaming smiles and pride in being presented the quilts is priceless.

The lunch was attended by over 150 people, mainly female veterans.  The room collectively held over 300 years of defence force service from female veterans. It was an honour for the Servicewomen's RSLWA Subbranch to be able to acknowledge them. This was made possible by your contribution. The room was full of laughs, shared experiences, connection, acknowledgement of the difficulties faced by female veterans and remembrance of our fallen colleagues.

The Servicewomen's RSLWA Subbranch and I personally would like to say thank you for your generous contribution.

Regards

Jo Wilson

How good is that. I do love it when we can surprise our deserving veterans with a quilt and remind them that their service is appreciated.

Till next time... keep spreading the word and  happy stitching!
