October BOM - Double Four Patch

Hi Everyone

This month I have another fairly simple block for everyone to try called a double four patch.

I think it would be nice if we could keep a darker colour (I've used black, but navy or brown would work too) in the same spot for each block.

So you will need two 6 1/2in squares, one light coloured 3 1/2in x 14in strip and one black or dark coloured 3 1/2in x 14in strip.

It is important to make sure you stitch with accurate 1/4in seams so that your block will go back together in the end.
First stitch your two 14in strips together. Then press the seam towards the darker fabric.
(The image on the right shows the seam pressed to the dark on the wrong side)

Cut four 3 1/2in x 6 1/2in rectangles from the sewn strip.

Arrange the strips into two new four patches patterns. Then stitch the strips together locking the seams together at the centre seam. Press seam to one side. Once sewn these should measure 6 1/2in square.

Arrange your double four patch blocks into two rows of two blocks.  Make sure that you arrange your block so the darker diagonal row of mini squares are aligned.

Sew the two blocks together in each row and press the seam in the top row to the right and the seam in the bottom row to the left. (Towards the 6 1/2in square)

Stitch your two rows together locking the centre seams together. Press the seam in one direction.

That's it all done.  Feel free to be creative with your fabric choices.  As previously stated in our BOM request NO PINK, PURPLE, NO FLORALS (Aussie Flora OK). There are many different variations of how this block can be made by moving around the fabrics.  We may explore that in 2015.

I want to say thank you to the couple of ladies that have put suggestions forward for future BOM's.  I will get back to you when I get a chance.  November is going to be the poppy blocks again for Remembrance Day. So stay tuned.

As you know once you've stitched your blocks please send to me

  1. These will look good - funnily I have a new dress made from that blotchy black fabric.
