Well another AHQ weekend done and dusted and what a fabulous weekend as always.
Bobbie and I had a great day on the Saturday bus tour.
Bel was our bus boss with clipboard in hand she did a
sterling job making sure everyone was on board and no one got left behind. At
times it was a little like herding cats but she persevered. Good job Bel.
We were a bit spoiled this year as we had the delightful Sam
giving us a running commentary on some historical and fun facts on Canberra.
Greg was our photographer extraordinaire and went everywhere
with us. I’m sure he would have needed a Bex and a lay down when we got back!
Old Parliament House was interesting and had lots of
exhibitions on, one was Behind the Lines and the other was the Press Gallery.
Lots of cartoons stories and camera equipment. It seems it was very different job
making the news years ago as their equipment was so bulky and heavy.
Some of the featured stories were enlightening and it was
good to see protests are nothing new.
Something that caught our eye was the Gurindji Freedom Walk
Banners. Stunning and thought provoking artworks.
The Australian
Democracy Museum was interesting. We have to admit we hadn’t heard of some of
our early Prime Ministers. In our
defence some weren’t in the job very long!
The building itself is very beautiful but a bit of a rabbit
warren, at least Bobbie and I thought so, as we kept getting lost. The
courtyard gardens are beautifully tended with lovely shady places to sit.
We had time for coffee and a bit of lunch in the Courtyard
cafe and then decided to duck over to
the gardens to see the roses. What a glorious space it is. Some of the roses are hundreds of years old,
highly perfumed and come from all over the world. We would have loved more time
there. Canberra is such a beautiful city with loads of green spaces.
Time to board the bus for Hobbysew but before we did Greg
wanted a group photo on the steps outside Old Parliament House! Finally got
that done to his satisfaction… that herding of
cats comes to mind again lol
Hobbysew Belconnen, if you haven’t been there, is a great
patchwork and sewing shop, there wouldn’t be much you couldn’t find there and
the girls are all very helpful. More than a little cash may have been splashed
in there. All for a good cause of course AHQ.
We had time for a shop in the mall before our day was done.
Bobbie and I thought we’d look in Bed Bath and Table and we got chatting to one
of the sales ladies. She was originally from The Mid North Coast where Bobbie
and I live and her daughter had received a quilt from Aussie Hero’s a few years
ago, small world.
She directed us to a very good coffee shop which we were grateful for.
Back on the bus, it was a little quieter on the way back to
the Rex, think we might have been just a little bit weary but happily so.
All in all, a great and enjoyable day out.
Thanks Bel, Greg and Sam, job well done and appreciated by
us all.
Jacqui and Bobbie
Great report Jacqui and Bobbie, thank you!
