LOG CABIN VARIATION
COLOURS
The colours for the Log Cabin Variation block are
AUTUMN COLOURS
&
EARTHY COLOURS
Think about the cool of Autumn and mushy leaves on the ground as they decay.
Think about the fading colours of the beautiful autumn leaves...often deep, dark and
moody browns, greens, golds and reds.
Think about our beautiful Aussie bush...tree bark, tree leaves, vegetation, rocks,
granite country, colours and texture of the The Three Sisters at Katoomba,
the rocky twelve (?) Apostles off the coast of Victoria.
What a beautiful country we live in.
FABRICS
100% cotton
Textured prints
Printed overall patterns
Tone-on-tone prints
Batiks
Mottled patterns and Hand dyed fabrics...
will all work well with these blocks.
These are a few of the fabrics I pulled out of my collection...
mmm...that orange was a bit bright! Maybe don't consider that one. LOL!
Once the fabrics are gathered together, separate them into two sections...
LIGHTS and DARKS
The light ones don't have to be very light, they just need to be lighter than the dark ones.
The dark ones don't have to be very dark, they just need to be darker than the light ones.
Choose FOUR DARK fabrics and THREE LIGHT fabrics.
These will be a great blocks for using up leftover strips from previous projects and
lots of small pieces that are left in your collection.
CUTTING THE FABRIC
Either follow this plan or use the second method that follows.
FOUR DARK FABRICS
Fabric #1 Cut 2 pieces, 2 3/4 inch wide - 12 inch & 9 3/4 inch long
Fabric #2 Cut 2 pieces, 2 1/4 inch wide - 8 1/4 inch & 6 1/2 inch long
Fabric #3 Cut 2 pieces, 2 1/4 inch wide - 5 1/2 inch & 3 3/4 inch long
Fabric #4 Cut 1 piece, 2 3/4 x 2 3/4 inch
THREE LIGHT FABRICS
Cut 2 pieces, 2 inch wide - 8 1/4 inch & 9 3/4 inch long
Cut 2 pieces, 1 1/2 inch wide - 5 1/2 inch & 6 1/2 inch long
Cut 2 pieces, 1 1/2 inch wide - 2 3/4 inch & 3 3/4 inch long
CONSTRUCTING THE BLOCK
1/4 inch seam allowance
Take the small square and lay the smallest light colour piece on any side, stitch then press the seam allowance onto the light piece of fabric
Take the second piece of light fabric and position on the first two pieces of fabric
AS SHOWN
Stitch and press the seam allowance onto the light strip.
Sew the smallest dark rectangle onto the previous piece and press the seam allowance as before.
Repeat for larger piece of the same fabric.
Repeat the process for the next two light rectangles.
Notice the wavy fabric. It was quite light and stretched a little with the ironing.
We'll deal with that a little further down.
Continue adding the last two dark rectangles, sewing and pressing as before.
And there it is, the Log Cabin Variation Block.
When a fabric has stretched in the ironing, I remember not to use it again LOL! and then
I put the block on the cutting mat and position the ruler over it
to give me an exact square and trim off the small excess.
DO NOT TRIM YOUR BLOCK
JUST SEND AS IT IS AND KNOW
THAT IT WILL BE PERFECT IN THE QUILT WHEN TRIMMED
...as all blocks are made a little smaller to make them the exact
size needed for each quilt designed.
