Request List 19 August 2025

Hi all,

Cath here.

Thank you all for your words of welcome and words of encouragement, much appreciated.

Let me introduce you to one of our volunteers, Marianne. She does the mail on Wednesdays. Marianne posts out the items that you need for your request/s: for example, embroideries, such as the Rising Sun and images that have been printed onto printable fabric. Marianne also posts out the pre-paid post bags and sends off quilts to recipients. Huge thanks to Marianne for sorting the mail each week. I think you would be surprised at just how much there is to be posted, at times.

The dinner is coming up and it is good to have a name tag to wear at all the events. If you would like one this is your last chance to order one before the dinner. The cost is $15. The bank details will be provided to you via email once you place your order. Your name tag will be posted to you once we receive it so you should have it in good time before the dinner. Please email me on jan-maree@aussieheroquilts.com.au if you would like one.

PRIORITIES

As always, the requests are listed in priority order. There has been a big change over of staff on deployments, so we have lots of new requests from places in the Middle East.

PRIORITY no 1. He is the last of his group to receive his quilt. All the others have received their quilts. I would like to get his done and off to him.

PRIORITY 2-36. These are all new for members on deployments overseas.

Post can be so unreliable to some of our overseas locations so it can take a while to get parcels to them so the sooner they are in the mail the better.

All the rest of our requests are listed in priority order. Please let me know if you can help.

POST BY DATE

The post by date for all Requests on this list is 23 Sep 25 please, or earlier if you can manage this.  If you cannot make that date, please let me know. Do reach out if you have any timing issues and we’ll resolve one way or the other. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it please let me know BEFORE you post it.  Also, if this time frame is too tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss, thank you.

Request Information

When selecting a request, remember, you do not have to include everything they have asked for. Footy quilts do not need to have the logo or even the team’s name. Using the team colours is all that is required. Simple is perfectly acceptable.  A number of these requests have given you favourite colours as well as footy teams or other hobbies and interests. It is fine to make a quilt using their favourite colours but please include at least one of their interests.  It is fine to keep it simple.

If there is more than one request on this list that you would be happy to do I suggest that you send me a list of requests and tell me how many you want to be allocated….i.e. one of the following please….  There are always a few requests that everyone wants to do (and I can never pick them) so if the first one you ask for is taken then I can allocate another from your list if I have a list.

Any queries you might have, please don’t hesitate to contact via the AHQ email as per usual with any queries and we will assist you from there.  We may not know the answer, but it will be our pleasure to research and get back to you.

A reminder, when you are ready to post the quilt or laundry bag you’ve created, please use the PMKEYS number given you in any correspondence with the admin team.  This helps the volunteer admin team keep a track of what’s been sent etc.  The PMKEYS number is included in the address details we supply for your recipient e.g.  the 7-digit number in bold below.

CPL Wanda Quilt 8765432

TG 3456

AFPO XX

ADF

Sydney NSW 2890

Also, please use the Aussie Heroes PO Box address on your parcel in the event the parcel is Returned to Sender - the PO Box is a safe place in the event of any mishaps with postage.

Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags)

PO Box 248,

Cherrybrook, NSW 2126

Don’t forget to take a photo of your completed quilt or laundry bag to email to AHQ with the name and PMKEYS of the recipient and we can include in the Weekly Dispatches blog and add to the tally of quilts and laundry bags sent off to the troops.  I personally love viewing the photos of those projects dispatched – so inspiring.

If you are using an AHQ supplied prepaid satchel please kindly use the AHQ address for the return address– also for your own packaging – if a parcel is Returned to Sender it is likely we can expedite its journey to the recipient from Sydney.

Please also please hold on to the Tracking number (the pink sticker that you should remove before posting – we’ve experienced mail delays lately (haven’t we all?) and having the Tracking number is very reassuring to keep an eye on the parcel’s progress in arriving at its destination.

Don’t forget, if you look at today’s Request List and need help choosing, please feel free to get in touch to discuss, we will be ready to reply and offer guidance by email. Our goal is to help you find a request that you will be comfortable with doing. If you need a crest etc we may be able to post embroideries / printed fabric images or email some of these to you.

Helpful info may be gleaned here  http://aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com/2019/07/information-post-for-those-that-sew-for.html    I look forward to seeing the photos of completed quilts and LBs when they are ready to post off.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE copy the ENTIRE line if you wish to nominate for a quilt or laundry bag.

For example….

Marvel Theme. Ironman     M       LB      1

This is really important to make sure that neither you nor I copy the wrong number which could lead to me giving you the wrong details for specific request.  If you find it hard to copy and paste, please copy the line out as above.

Decoding The Columns

The first column is the theme or preferences requested.

The second column indicates the gender of the recipient.

The third column is as follows.

B=both quilt and laundry bag (feel free to nominate to JUST do the laundry bag if you wish)

Q= just a quilt

LB = just a laundry bag

F= female

M= male

Please let the Admin crew know if you have any other questions....Just email friendsofahq@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing what you want to make this week. Happy stitching!

Cheers,

Jan-Maree

Grati-Wednesday 13th August 2025

Happy Wednesday Friends!

As the Request list has now moved to Tuesday we decided to move the Grati-blog to Wednesday.  It will give us that nice boost to get over the hump of the week!

Once again we have a multitude of thank you's from around the globe. Grab a cuppa, sit back and relax while you soak up some well-deserved gratitude!

AHQ Thank You Dinner is only 73 sleeps!
Don't forget to buy your tickets.

***

Dear Clarissa L,

Thank you for your very generous donation of a laundry bag. It has immediately been pressed into service! I enclose a photograph to confirm its arrival.

In previous roles, my team and I have worked with Jan-Maree and Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags) to highlight personnel who would benefit from the great efforts of volunteers like yourself. I am in awe of the skills and thought that goes into each and every quilt and bag.

As always, the personal touches make this gift special. The imagery and colours are representative of my previous service, and colour matched to my current appointment with the United Nations. Please thank your granddaughter for her assistance in selecting materials and threading the cord. She has a great eye.

I was able to watch the Lions versus Wallabies last week. It was a thrilling match. Unfortunately, I shared the game with some Irish lads who will not be letting me forget the outcome any time soon…

Thank you for the support that you provide our servicepeople. I know that the quilts and laundry bags that you work on are valued, indeed cherished by their recipients. I am certain that your son will attest to this too.

Best regards to you and your family,

***
Jan-Maree B,

Just a brief note of thanks for all the work AHQ volunteers have done for Op ACCORDION, Rotation 2. Rotation 2 complete their six month deployment this week, with their reliefs already experiencing the heat of a UAE desert summer. Having been made aware of your team’s dedication, please don’t be surprised when more requests roll in.

Attached is a photo of some of your handiwork. I was too slow to get a photo of the team enjoying your ANZAC biscuits, though.
 They were very popular!

Thanks again for your support of our ADF and for your tireless efforts to make a difference to those far from home.

Dear Cathie J.

I was so thrilled to receive the quilt and laundry bag you made for me - thank you so much!  The way you made it and meticulously represented so many aspects around the partnership and friendship between the two countries, the traditional designs, and the photos. It really did surprise me.

A bit about me. I have mixed heritage. My father was from PNG and was one of the first dentists in the country before it gained independence in 1975. His two older brothers were fuzzy wuzzy  angels at a very young age. My mother was from a Polynesian island in Fiji called Rotuma. I was born in PNG and spent my early childhood there. I went to high school in Sydney but have spent most of my life in Brisbane where my family is based. My wife and I have 2 adult kids, one of whom along with his wife has blessed us with two beautiful grandchildren.

I am part of a contingent of 15 ADF personnel across the three services with a rank span ranging from Airforce Sergeant to an Army Colonel. Our roles are as uniformed staff officers working in the military force and in the civilian logistics and aviation space where the Australians are renowned for their professionalism and experience. A great opportunity to represent our country in this multinational setting.

I have been in country since March 2025 and am learning a lot about the UN and this country. We’ve had the opportunity to do things with the community which has included visits to churches and orphanages.

I head back to Australia this weekend for two weeks of leave catching up with family. Very excited about this.

Thanks again for the quilt and laundry bag. Much appreciated.  Hope you like the attached photos.

Kind regards

Hello Joan H,

I am a Lieutenant in the Australian Army and I am writing to you after receiving your laundry bag and enclosed letter.

Thank you so very much for sewing it together, I loved it the second I saw it, nothing like Aussie animals on a lovely backdrop!

It will serve me well during my upcoming deployment with the Australian Army. I see you’re from Mudgeeraba, I love the Gold Coast as I spent a large part of my childhood around Kirra with my family and maternal grandparents!

I am looking forward to my trip and again I say thank you for what you do with AHQ, it hasn’t gone unnoticed. All the best to you, Alan and your family across Queensland.

Warm thanks and kind regards,

***

Dear Bridget R and Jan-Maree B,

I wanted to let you know that I’ve received my quilt—and to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was absolutely blown away when it was presented to me. Made all the more special as they were two long-time friends and highly respected Navy men—who made the presentation.  And of course, my big brother!

The thought, craftsmanship, and attention to detail in the stitch work are truly impressive.

You should be incredibly proud of the work you do. You've brought a great deal of joy to this veteran, and the quilt has already become a treasured family heirloom.

Thank you again, and warmest wishes,

Dear Gayle W,

Thank you so much for your handiwork – it is amazing! I have the quilt and laundry bag displayed in my room and it makes me smile when I get home from work. It is beautiful and I love it.

I recently returned from my leave break in QLD (with my mum, husband and kids) and the package was waiting for me in Juba, South Sudan. It was great for my morale after 30 hours in transit and three flights! I was also a bit homesick so it arrived at the best time.

I am working as a Gender Advisor on the Headquarters. It is good job and I’m learning so much here. I went to Kenya for a conference, which was great. Everything was so vibrant. My deployment is for 12 months and I’ll be back in time for Christmas. We are going to have a holiday in Japan, visit friends and go skiing. No doubt it will be a fabric and artistic paradise over there. I’ll be thinking of AHQ!

I hope everything is going well in your garden and that all your animals are well, especially the greyhound. I have a dog at home, a black and white Jack Russell and I love that critter so much! My mum sends me phots of him all the time.

I hope that your daughter is enjoying life in the Navy and you get to see her again soon.

AHQ is a great organisation and it must be fun to be creative and connect with others. Thank you for supporting us - it means so much.

All the very best to you and your loved ones.

Good Morning Heather B,

I received the laundry bag you created for me yesterday and can I firstly say it absolutely made my day! You could not have done a better job matching it to my request, I am not a creative person so I could not have even envisioned what you came up with. In my unit me and all mates like to think of ourselves as cowboys so I know they will all be jealous of my laundry bag every time we travel.

It was so nice to read your letter and hear about your family history in the ADF, I am the first person in my family to join so I always get a little jealous of people like yourself with a rich lineage in the ADF. I also do a bit of swimming through the Scarboro surf life saving club and I agree a highlight of my weekends is a post ocean swim coffee. I am missing Australian coffee very much over here, looking forward to returning home to Perth soon.

Thank you also for the tim tams, we are currently eating them in the office whilst I write this email.

***

Good evening Joy H,

I just wanted to reach out and let you know that I received the amazing quilt you crafted. I really appreciate the time and effort you put into the artistic designs for the food and cocktails, as well as all the dog designs you managed to weave into it.

Thanks for all that you do to support the Defence community. It means a lot!

Kind Regards,

 ***

Hello Janis K!

I am just emailing to say thank you very much for the amazing quilt you made for me- it finally arrived after many months following the ship around all over the world!

I wanted to let you know that it arrived in one piece as did the snacks so thank you very much for those!
I have never had much patience for patch working but I do sew which I very much enjoy, so I understand a bit, I think, the work and the skill that went into this quilt so thank you again for taking the time to create this master piece!

I hope 2025 has been treating you well so far and best wishes for the rest of the year!

Thanks

***

Good Afternoon Beverley F and hello from the Middle East,

I am so sorry for taking so long to get back to you, it has been quite the adventure here so far!

Thank you so much for my beautiful quilt and laundry bag. It’s a bit warm for the quilt at the moment so I have it sitting on the end of my bed, but the laundry bag has had a lot of use so far. I love them both and it was so incredibly generous of you to donate your time to make them, particularly given the short turn around.

I also loved reading your story and about your family and life. You sound like you have such a strong family and I’m sure you must be bursting with pride with all of their achievements. And proud of yourself too no doubt, it couldn’t be easy working with children with learning difficulties, but I can only imagine how rewarding it must have been. What an honorable experience!

To share a little bit about my life, I grew up in Western Sydney and wanted to join the military from a young age. I ended up joining the Army in 2017 and have loved every second of it. I’m in the Artillery by corps, but my stream is Surveillance and Target Acquisition, so I work with the drones in Brisbane primarily. Although, I have been fortunate enough to be able to experience postings throughout the eastern parts of Australia – Canberra, Brisbane, Wagga Wagga, Puckapunyal (regional Victoria) and now Townsville. I was also fortunate enough to have met my husband in Wagga Wagga who is also in the Army, and we’ve been able to post around together for the past few years. We are hoping to try to start our own family when I return from deployment in June of next year, so fingers crossed!

Thank you again for making the quilt and the laundry bag, I will definitely cherish them.

And thank you for all that you do for my fellow servicemen and women.

Warmest Regards,

***

Hello Melissa G,

Thank you very much for the GC Suns/John Deere Quilt. It is awesome!! I like the star and football patterns as well, I think you have done a great job and hope you enjoy your time off from work and suitably recharge.

A little bit about me, I joined from QLD in 2003 from a farming community 70km west of Toowoomba, I conducted my basic training in HMAS Cerberus in Victoria and then posted over to Fleet Base West in Rockingham. I have served on HMAS Westralia, HMAS Sirius (11yrs) which are both 40,000 ton fuel Tankers, and also on HMAS Albany which is a Armidale Class Patrol Boat out of Darwin. I have also had numerous shore postings based at HMAS Stirling. I currently live in Perth, with my Wife and 2 Children (13 & 11) and seem to spend all my spare time ferrying them to Football, Netball and AFL Umpire training……. Wouldn’t have it any other way though!

The Aussie Hero Quilts are a great Idea, I have been in the Navy now for 22 years and have seen a fair few people with the laundry bags and Quilts, however have never been lucky enough to receive one.

Hope this email finds you well, and again, Thank you very much for the quilt, it will definitely be used!

Hi Bobbie S and the Mystery BoMers,

I just received my quilt from AHQ. Thank you so much, it is perfect.

Thank you for all you do. These items are a very special way for us to remember our deployments and it is very much appreciated.

Hope you are well.

Kind regards,

Good Evening Sonia J,

I really appreciate the time and effort that you have put into making this laundry bag, it looks fantastic and I am really looking forward to putting it to good use.

Many thanks for donating your valuable time in making these bags for members of the Defence Force.

I hope that your son is doing well and still enjoying Navy life.

Kind Regards,

***

Until next week keep your letters, emails and photos coming in.  Wednesdays would be so totally boring without them!

Cheers Bel P
