Grati-Wednesday 5th November 2025

Happy Wednesday Friends!

Grab a cuppa, sit back and relax while you soak up some well-deserved gratitude!

Emma G, Gday hi hello!

I was fortunate enough to receive your wonderful laundry bag! I’m happy to say it arrived safely, and I can’t thank you enough for the time, effort, and (I imagine) expense you put into making it. It’s truly fantastic and something I know I’ll treasure throughout my Army career.

It couldn’t have arrived at a better time. I’ve just returned from deployment and am about to head out again, not before starting full-time at the Royal Military College next year. Yes, I’m moving over to the dark side! So it’s safe to say your laundry bag will come in very handy.

Thank you also for the Tim Tams, travel turtle, and stickers. I get a real kick out of filling my water bottle with stickers, and the Tim Tams have been a perfect treat.

Hopefully, when I finish up, I can give back to current servicemen and women too. In my younger days, I actually used to make quilts out of old T-shirts!

Anyway, Emma, thank you again for your generosity and the time you put into making my laundry bag. It’s been a real pleasure writing to say thanks.

Warm wishes,

Emma G

G'day Pennie T,

I am reaching out to say a very sincere thank you for going to the effort of making me a quilt as part of the Aussie Hero Quilts initiative.

I bloody love the quilt and put it straight on my bed after showing off your handiwork and the great Carlton logo. This is my fifth deployment to the Middle East/North Africa but the first time I have sought a quilt or wash bag. I have always admired the work yourself and the other quilters do but the hero part of the name never really sat well with me as I didn't, and don't, consider myself a hero and therefore requesting something to be made specifically for me felt strange. I don't really know why I had a change of heart for this deployment, but I'm glad I did.

I'm married to a fellow RAAFie and I will hit my 20 years of service in January, just before I redeploy home. My wife and I have two kids, a daughter and son, who keep us on our toes. The four of us are all Carlton supporters so the quilt will be popular next season (which I pray is kinder to us long suffering supporters) during the cooler months of winter as we live in the Newcastle area. I agree with your husband's opinion, the logo you used is a better version than the current one.

Again, I really appreciate the time and effort you've gone to to make the quilt, a number of people on my rotation are now sporting your quilts as well. Receiving these types of things are a great morale boost.

Cheers,

Dear Louise M,

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your skill and taking the time and effort to produce an amazing piece of quilting work representing my time here.
This is my second quilt for my major deployments, with the first one being from Afghanistan in 2012, and I can't fully explain what they mean to us.
The quilt is not just for some decor for our living spaces. It is a tangible reference to us that people back in Australia still care about the military members that are constantly spending extended periods away from home and family.

My mother is also a quilter from down in Tassie, so the time, effort and skill level required to produce such a piece of work is not lost on me. I appreciate your kind words in your card, and know that everything that we both do makes our piece of the  world just a little bit nicer.

Once again, thank you. It means so much to all of us.

Good afternoon Ruth S,

I just wanted to send a heartfelt thank you for the incredible laundry bag you crafted for me. You absolutely nailed my request!

It arrived at my home yesterday, and my family sent through photos of your amazing work. I was genuinely thrilled when I saw them, you made my day! Your thoughtful effort has truly brightened my week, and I’m looking forward to using it on future trips.

Thank you very much again!

Warm regards,

Dear Bobbie S and the Mystery BOMers and Jan-Maree,

My Uncle has received a quilt from you.

He started his RAF career in1940 in the UK as an aircraft engineer, servicing both Wellington Bombers and also Spitfires, but very quickly transferred up to Yorkshire to help set up 458 Squadron. He served across North Africa and was billeted in Malta, both in 1941 and in 1943. He was discharged shortly after the war in Europe ended in 1945.

At his age he was not well enough to travel to Malta earlier this month for the final reunion of 458 Squadron, and to receive the beautiful Aussie Hero Quilt in person and the accompanying letter from each of you.

Fortunately, someone was there as part of the UK reunion team and was kind enough to deliver both, by hand to my uncle last week.

I visited my Uncle today and read both letters to him as well as describing each panel on the quilt as his eyesight is very poor, although he was able to appreciate the work in producing such a beautiful item to remember his time in the squadron.

He has asked me to contact you to say thank you for both the gift and for all the work your team does supporting both serving personnel and veterans the whole spectrum of professional services, doing important work at any time and anywhere in the world they are needed, without question.

We all appreciate still having my Uncle with us and he endears my children with the clarity of his memory of his time with 458 squadron.

With our very best wishes.

Hello Angela T,

Just a line of thanks for the wonderful gift that came in the post yesterday. The RAAF crested laundry bag is exceptional and so very kind of you. I can see from your letter the amazing family ties you have with the ADF so you will know just how significant and special it is to receive such a gift. The time you invested is the real gift and I really appreciate you spending yours on me.

So you know a little of where it has gone to. I am originally from the UK where my Dad and his two brothers served in the RAF, Navy and Army. I think my Dad made a wise choice and would have been proud to see me serve in the Royal Australian Air Force. Far North QLD is now the spiritual home for my family of 2 boys and a girl and yes we are all mad Cowboys and Maroons fans!

As a Defence town it wasn’t long until I was encouraged to join the Army. After a long recruitment run an Air Force specialist visiting the area picked up on my CV and had me about turn and join the RAAF – this is now my 10th year and I am really proud to have been able to provide a contribution to the country that has welcomed us all so well and we now call home. I may be a Brit by birth but am an Aussie by choice.

In the past 5 years I have deployed on the Bushfires, WA floods, COVID Assist and a variety of exercises and operations around Australia and around the world. My job is never dull and I never tire of showing fellow Australians and Allies what the awesome people in Air Force and wider defence community do in service to our people and country.

Once again Angie thanks for your kind words, time and amazing gift. The work you and your colleagues do is simply terrific.

Best wishes

Dear Bel P,

Thank you for the incredible laundry bag, which you have so thoughfully crafted.  I appreciate the time, effort and care you have put into the bag.  It is something I will always make sure to pack when I travel.

Receiving your letter was a genuine pleasure, and I especially enjoyed reading about your extensive career in both the Navy and APS. It is heart-warming to read about your family's deep involvment in the Navy, an you must be so proud of your children and grandson.

Your commitment and support to the Aussie Hero Quilts is a testament to your character and truly commendable. I know our deployed members and their families deeply appreciate you and the other volunteers support providing quilts and laundry bags, reminding us of our connecton to home. I am unfortunately unable to attend the Thank You Weekend Dinner, however I wish you and your family continued happiness.

Bravo Zulu!
