Last week I had the privilege of presenting an Aussie Hero Quilt to the LTCOL of 8/9 RAR at Gallipoli Barracks, Brisbane. After a minor hiccup with gaining entry to the Barracks - best made instructions do not always go to plan! - I was escorted by Maj M to the HQ of 8/9 RAR. Fortunately I had met Maj M when we did our tour of Gallipoli Barracks in September and he came to save my day and appointment so I could present the quilt.
Upon arrival at the office of the LTCOL, he was keen to see what was created for him.
I think I can say he was suitably impressed especially
seeing that there was even “bushmaster” fabric incorporated (Thanks Michal @
Cloth Cuts). Showing him it was ready to hang with a rod pocket, he said it was
going to take pride and place with his “special” army memorabilia in his “man
cave”.
To show this appreciation he presented me with a
challenge coin, which I will treasure.
Time for photographs now so we were joined by RSM R in
front of 8/9 RAR HQ.
Before departing I met one of the Corporals (off duty)
who had requested the quilt for his Leader, so it was great that he could see
the quilt that was created for him. This Corporal was keen to see the LT COL
recognised as not only a great Leader but also as a person who cares about the
individuals under his command. The saying on the quilt “Be a good human, better
than you were yesterday” is testament to the nature of this lovely gentleman.
