Invictus Thank You

G'day all

I wanted to share this lovely letter that we received in regard to the quilts and laundry bags we made for our Aussie Invictus Team.

In case you can't read it, here is a transcription.

"Dear Jan-Maree

On behalf of the Australian Defence Force, I would like to take the opportunity to express our thanks for your support of Team Australia at the recent Invictus Games. The Invictus Games use the power of sport to inspire recovery, support rehabilitation and generate a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.

Thank you to you and all your members for the very thoughtful and creative laundry bags and quilts that our competitors and staff were fortunate to receive.  The presentation of the laundry bags to our competitors at our Team Dinner, prior to departure, certainly added to the excitement!  To then receive a quilt upon return was a lovely way to bookend the event.

On behalf of all of the bag and quilt recipients, thank you to you and to all of the Aussie Hero Quilt members who put so much care and effort into making something so special for our competitors and staff.

Beautiful gifts from exceptional people in Aussie Hero Quilts.

Yours Sincerely

PD Winter, AM, CSV, ADC

Brigadier

Director General ADF Sport"

Til next time, keep spreading the word and happy stitching!

10 Years or more of ADF Service- Special Laundry Bag offer to acknowledge your service!

10 years or more of ADF service?

Special Laundry Bag offer to acknowledge your service!

Hey folks,

We have decided that it’s time again to do something a bit special. We

currently have an opportunity to add to our list at the moment and around our

lovely nation we have amazing volunteers who love to sew for Aussie Heroes.

This is a special offer, open only ‘til 6pm (Sydney time) Sunday night but will

be capped at 50 requests, whichever is sooner.

If you are or have been a serving member who has completed 10 years of

service, or you know someone who has, then here is the deal. You have until

6pm Sunday night to request a personalised Aussie Hero laundry bag for

yourself or for someone you know. The recipient must have served 10 years or

more and does not need to be deployed, or still serving at the time of the

request.

We are hopeful that this will give us the chance to recognise some of those

who have not had the chance to deploy, or because they have served on a

deployment which does not meet the criteria to receive an Aussie Heroes

laundry bag. Nonetheless, they need to know their service counts as well. The

recipient does not have to be currently serving.

You need to EMAIL (no messages or texts please) on friendsofAHQ@gmail.com

with essential details including name, rank, number of years served, PM keys

(or service number) postal address and your preferences.

Please bear in mind that your laundry bag will be designed and made by a

volunteer and they are limited to what they have access to. Service crests and

corps badges are mostly no problem.

Lastly, whoever is requesting a laundry bag will have to cover the cost of

postage ($15) as we cannot ask the volunteer to cover those costs as well as

their time and materials. The funds will need to be deposited into the Aussie

Hero Bank Account and a receipt forwarded to Aussie Heroes by email before a

laundry bag is constructed. Bank details etc will be forwarded via email once

the request has been received and accepted.

This is a short term offer which ends at 6pm Sunday 3 July 2022. Recipient

must have served 10 years or more and does not need to be currently

deployed. $15 postage must be paid prior to bag being made.

Remember, you need to EMAIL me (no messages or texts please) on

friendsofAHQ@gmail.com

Subject must include Attn: Catherine - 10 years + service Aussie Hero Laundry

Bag offer

We are looking forward to hearing from YOU! #thankyouforyourservice

Invictus Quilts

Hi All,

I am sorry it has taken me so long to share this post but here it is at last. Before the team headed overseas we presented our Aussie Invictus competitors with an Aussie Hero Laundry Bag. At the end of April, beginning of May we started posting out their quilts.   Below I am sharing just a couple of the thank you messages we received.

From Mark A

When I was selected for the Australian Invictus Games Team I had no idea of the special gifts Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags) would hand make for all of the competitors.  Whether I was told and forgot or didn’t know, I was taken back when we were presented our hand made Laundry Bags in Sydney prior to leaving for the games in The Hague. The thought that someone who doesn’t know any of the competitors would personalise their handmade creations for us was unbelievable. We were then told we would also have a Quilt made for us on our return. I received mine last week and didn’t know what to do with it- do I hang it on the wall?  It is a piece of art. It was made to be used and now the colder weather is on its way I will make sure it’s my “go to” quilt/blanket. It is nice and thick and will be very warm.

I’d really like to thank Lynn F for all her great work. She went above and beyond with her research and detailed inlays, the material and layout. Lynn made both the Laundry Bag and the Quilt. Her husband Arthur, helped by digitising the logos for the machine and Philomena H was given the job of joining the three pieces of quilt together with her excellent stitching.

I will think of them whenever I’m cold and go for the beautiful quilt.

The magical people who are Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags) don’t expect anything in return but I have some special mementoes I saved to pass onto Lynn, Arthur and Philomena. I hope they cherish them as I will the quilt and laundry bag.

From Lucy

Hi Bridget R, Lorraine H, Inge C and Jan-Maree,

I would just like to write and thank you all for the wonderful gift! Bridget - thank you for the beautiful laundry bag and Lorraine - thank you for the gorgeous quilt. And Jan-Maree - thank you for brightening the days of so many through the work of Aussie Hero Quilts!

Both items are absolutely beautiful and will be pieces that I treasure forever. I love them! They are honestly one of the best gifts that I have ever received; it was better than Christmas when I unwrapped the parcel!

The quilt has already been keeping me toasty this winter, and I’m sure I’ll get lots of use out of my personalised laundry bag in future travels. I really appreciate the work that must have gone into making them both and am so thankful to receive them.

Thank you for the hard work of Aussie Hero Quilt sewers and thanks again!

Warm wishes,

Here are the photos of the quilts made for the competitors.  What a fabulous job you all did.

A huge thank you to Inge for all her hard work embroidering all the patches needed for the laundry bags, and to everyone else who helped with the embroideries for the quilts. The embroiderers are often the unsung heroes of Aussie Heroes but we certainly appreciate them!!

This was taken of our recipients after they received their laundry bags just prior to their departure.

And here are some of the happy faces. I know there were a few more photos received via Instagram but I missed saving some.

Till next time... keep spreading the word and happy stitching!

Grati-Tuesday 28th June 2022

Happy Tuesday Friends!

Hope everyone has had an awesome week!

Two 20+ years of service Defence members were presented their quilts and laundry bags during the week.  It is amazing achievement for anyone but especially for two women!

So grab a cuppa, sit back, relax and enjoy the gratitude letters below.
....

Good afternoon AHQ,

On behalf of HMAS Arunta, I would like to pass on our thank you and gratitude to the wonderful team who made our recent Laundry Bags. To see the joy on the sailors faces when they opened their parcels were priceless. They were so impressed and thankful for all the hard work and dedication your team provide.

Please pass on my thanks to all who provided such amazing and excellent laundry bags.

Again you guys rock.

Cheers

....

Dear Jan-Maree B

Recently we received a beautifully hand crafted Aussie Heroes Quilt from your organisation in memory of our late son.

Words cannot describe the honour and pride we felt having received one of these unique quilts. We are so grateful to all your generous volunteers, Lynn F and Philomena H for their time and dedication in making something so special for us as a family to treasure in our sons memory.

Please pass on our sincere thanks to everyone involved.

With kindest regards

....

G’day Wendy B!

I just received my laundry bag and your note and I am so so grateful. It is absolutely gorgeous and I can’t thank you enough, its so beautiful!

I’ve served in HMA Ships Choules, Melbourne, Bathurst, Glenelg, Manoora, Tobruk, Leeuwin  and now I’m back serving in Choules again. I was recently an  Instructor for trainees at the beginning of their careers and I encouraged them to make the most of every opportunity. The opportunities and challenges they face today are very different from when I was at their level, but will give them no less of a challenging and rewarding career.

Thank you so much for blessing my day, your kindness has genuinely touched me and I’m so so grateful, I can’t thank you enough. May whatever God you believe in bless you for your kindness towards me.

My very kindest regards and most heartfelt thanks,

....

Hello Philomena H,

We are the parents of a RAAF Warrant Officer who was serving with the RAAF at Tindal Base in the Northern Territory at the time of his sudden death. He had served just over 32 years in the RAAF.

Your name, together with the other two ladies, Lynn F & Kerri B, has been given to us by Jan-Maree as being the three ladies who made a Fallen Warrior Quilt for us.

Jan-Maree told us you did the intricate quilting. It looks absolutely fantastic and certainly adds to the quality and appearance of the quilt.

We are writing to sincerely thank you for your contribution in making such a beautiful quilt for us. The finished product looks absolutely fantastic and we felt extremely humble and very emotional when it was presented to us

Our son had received a beautiful quilt, made by Ellen N, while he was on one of his 6 month deployments in Iraq/Afghanistan and was extremely excited on receiving it, making a special mention in one of his allocated weekly 10 minute 'phone call home, 10.20pm every Friday.

We now have that quilt and the two of them will be kept together as a wonderful memorial for him.

The amount of work involved in making the quilts is incredible and is a huge credit to all of you.

Our special one is absolutely beautiful and we can't thank you enough for the time, effort and love that has occurred in the production of it.

Thank you once again for making this very, very special Memorial Quilt for us.

Keep up the great work you are doing, the troops overseas really do appreciate their Quilts & Laundry Bags. Parents and other loved ones are very grateful for the special Fallen Warrior Quilts you make.

We trust you and yours are in good health.

Our kindest regards,

....

Good morning Aussie Hero Quilts,

I am pleased to say I have received a Laundry Bag from Beverley B.

Please pass on my sincere gratitude to Beverley as she has provided me with a beautiful piece of  artwork.  It arrived at the perfect time as I am starting leave tomorrow and this will be the first thing I pack in my suitcase.

Regards,

....

Philomena H & Lynn F,

I received my Aussie Hero Quilt today and was absolutely blown away and brought to tears (in a good way).

I just wanted to extend a huge thank you to your amazing self for the quilting work. It is more than apparent that you put your heart and soul into blessing our ADF women and men. Words fail to truly describe how much this means to me and so many others.

Jan-Maree B is such a dear friend and she lives a life of inspiration and encouragement to us all. Through every adversity as well as good times she has shown us all how to face life with such grace, dignity, compassion, love and immense courage. I believe like people attract like people, and although we have not met I can be well assured that you must be cut from the same cloth as you have teamed up together in AHQ.

I pray that there be many blessings bestowed upon you and your family and once again my heartfelt thanks to you for your part in this amazing quilt.

Kindest regards,

 ....

G'day Wendy,

I am writing to thank you for the laundry bag I received, it did put a smile on my face, I loved it. I am nearing the end of my deployment to Africa after nine months away.

You live in a lovely part of the world, I hope you were not affected by the flooding that happened there recently. I also hope that since the removal of restriction you have been able to get back and see both your mother and granddaughter.

I hope you are well and wishing you all the best for the remainder of 2022 and the future. I hope that many more Australian servicemen or women are lucky enough to receive a laundry bag made by you.

Yours Sincerely,
 ....

Good Morning AHQ,

I had the pleasure of presenting a RAAF Sergeant her quilt and Laundry bag (made by Ann S) which was a request for having served and still serving for 20+ years. She was absolutely thrilled with her quilt and laundry bag & loved the design as she is an avid bird lover, it was just perfect for her! (see photo below)

Regards,

 ....

Request List 27 June 2022

 Good morning all,

10th Anniversary Dinner.

Four months to go to our Annual Thank You Weekend in Canberra and our 10th Anniversary Celebration Dinner at the Rex Hotel.  We are slowly collecting items to be auctioned or raffled at the dinner, not to mention a few surprises for the Friday night event.

How gorgeous are these cushions made by Inge! These will be part of the silent auction on the night of the dinner.

Tickets available here from Trybooking. https://www.trybooking.com/events/798247/sessions

And now, here are the requests for this week.

POST BY DATE

The post by date for all Requests on this list is 2 August 2022  please, or earlier if you can manage this.  If you cannot make that date, please let me know. Do reach out if you have any timing issues and we’ll resolve one way or the other. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it please let me know BEFORE you post it.  Also, if this time frame is too tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss, thank you.

The rest of our Requests.

When selecting a request, remember, you do not have to include everything they have asked for. Footy quilts do not need to have the logo or even the team’s name. Using the team colours is all that is required. Simple is perfectly acceptable.  A number of these requests have given you favourite colours as well as footy teams or other hobbies and interests. It is fine to make a quilt using their favourite colours and include only one of their interests.  It is fine to keep it simple.

If there is more than one request on this list that you would be happy to do I suggest that you send me a list of requests and tell me how many you want to be allocated….i.e. one of the following please….  There are always a few requests that everyone wants to do (and I can never pick them) so if the first one you ask for is taken then I can allocate another from your list if I have a list.

Any queries you might have, please don’t hesitate to contact via the AHQ email as per usual with any queries and we will assist you from there.  We may not know the answer, but it will be our pleasure to research and get back to you.

A reminder, when you are ready to post the quilt or laundry bag you’ve created, please use the PMKEYS number given you in any correspondence with the admin team.  This helps the volunteer admin team keep a track of what’s been sent etc.  The PMKEYS number is included in the address details we supply for your recipient e.g.  the 7-digit number in bold below.

CPL Wanda Quilt 8765432

TG 3456

AFPO XX

ADF

Sydney NSW 2890

Also, please use the Aussie Heroes PO Box address on your parcel in the event the parcel is Returned to Sender -  the PO Box is a safe place in the event of  any mishaps with postage.

Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags)

PO Box 248,

Cherrybrook, NSW 2126

Don’t forget to take a photo of your completed quilt or laundry bag to email to AHQ with the name and PMKEYS of the recipient and we can include in the Weekly Dispatches blog and add to the tally of quilts and laundry bags sent off to the troops.  I personally love viewing the photos of those projects dispatched – so inspiring.

If you are using a AHQ supplied prepaid satchel please kindly use the AHQ address for the return address– also for your own packaging – if a parcel is Returned to Sender it is likely we can expedite its journey to the recipient from Sydney.

Please also please hold on to the Tracking number (the pink sticker that you should remove before posting – we’ve experienced mail delays lately (haven’t we all?) and having the Tracking number is very reassuring to keep an eye on the parcel’s progress in arriving at its destination.

Don’t forget, if you look at today’s Request List and need help choosing, please feel free to get in touch to discuss, we will be ready to reply and offer guidance by email. Our goal is to help you find a request that you will be comfortable with doing. If you need a crest etc we may be able to post embroideries / printed fabric images or email some of these to you.

Helpful info may be gleaned here  http://aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com/2019/07/information-post-for-those-that-sew-for.html    I look forward to seeing the photos of completed quilts and LBs when they are ready to post off.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE copy the ENTIRE line if you wish to nominate for a quilt or laundry bag.

For example….

Marvel Theme. Ironman     M       LB      1

This is really important to make sure that neither you nor I copy the wrong number which could lead to me giving you the wrong details for specific request.  If you find it hard to copy and paste, please copy the line out as above.

Decoding The Columns

The first column is the theme or preferences requested.

The second column indicates the gender of the recipient.

The third column is as follows.

B=both quilt and laundry bag (feel free to nominate to JUST do the laundry bag if you wish)

Q= just a quilt

LB = just a laundry bag

F= female

M= male

Please let the Admin crew know if you have any other questions....Just email friendsofahq@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing what you want to make this week. Happy stitching!

Cheers,

Jan-Maree
