SPINNING CROSS
THANK YOU
for making these blocks that will be used by the Coffs Harbour Sewing Team to
make quilts for deployed Aussie Heroes according to the specific
Requests they each make for what they would like to be included in their quilt.
COLOURS
RED - strong red, not orange, not burgundy or maroon
BLUE - royal blue like our Aussie flag
YELLOW - not lemon, not mustard
This beautiful block can be made in the colours shown above
or
with the red and blue sections reversed.
The cross should be yellow in both colour ways.
FABRICS
Plain fabrics as in the above sample are great but fabrics can also be
tone-on-tone prints
or
subtle prints on any of the three colours
Gender neutral prints please
ONLY 100% COTTON FABRIC
Please use 1/4 inch seam allowance
CUT OUT THE BLOCK
BLUE
Cut two squares 9 1/2 x 9 1/2 inch
Cut one square 1 1/2 x 1 1/2 inch
Cut two squares 5 1/8 x 5 1/8 inch
RED
Cut two squares 5 1/8 x 5 1/8 inch
YELLOW
cut four rectangles 1 1/2 x 4 3/4 inch
CONSTRUCTING THE BLOCK
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the four red squares - this will later be the cutting line.
Pin a red and a blue square together as shown, with right sides of fabric together.
Sew two seams, one on either side of the drawn line, 1/4 inch from the line, as shown.
Remove the pins and cut along the drawn line.
Press the seam allowance either open as I have done, or to one side.
Lay out all the parts of the centre of the block, as shown above.
Make the centre row by joining the yellow rectangles to the small blue square.
Press the seam allowances together onto the yellow fabric.
Make the two outside rows by joining the red/blue squares to the yellow rectangles.
Press the seam allowances together onto the yellow fabric.
Join the three rows together by laying an outside row on the centre row, with right sides together,
locking the small blue centre square with the yellow rectangle of the outside row.
NOTE This will happen easily if the seam allowances have been pressed in the
directions previously suggested.
Pin well. Sew the seam and then press the seam allowances together onto
the yellow fabric, towards the centre of the block.
Repeat for the last row.
This completes the centre of the block.
Turn on point and it's ready for the last step of the Spinning Star block.
Cut the two large blue squares diagonally as shown above.
Use a pin to mark the half way position along one side of the block.
Fold one of the large blue triangles in half with wrong sides together, along the diagonal cut.
Position that fold at the half-way pin and then open out the triangle and
pin along the edges, as shown below.
Sew the seam and repeat for the opposite side.
Then press the seam allowances onto the large blue triangles.
Position the block on the cutting mat, adjusting it so the sides of the centre
of the block are straight along a grid line.
Fabric has a little give in it and some small tugs should straighten it up.
Place the ruler along the grid line and the side of the block and trim off the two little triangles.
Repeat for the second side.
Repeat the folding, positioning, opening out and pinning of the last two
large blue triangles. Sew the seams.
Press the seam allowances, as before, onto the large blue triangles.
Please notice...my edges are not perfectly straight!
This is not a problem as ALL blocks will have the edges trimmed back
to make them the right size for each individual quilt design.
