Presentation of quilt to Captain Carl by Heather B

Apart from the Tour of Gallipoli Army Barracks, Jan-Maree and I had another important duty to perform last week.

Up northwest of Brisbane near the small country town of Dayboro lives a now retired veteran of both British and Australian Armies and his family. With a quilt packaged on the back seat, we were ready to surprise this gentleman!

When I took on the making of this quilt, Jan-Maree told me it was for someone special – in fact, he had already received 2 quilts BUT on deployment in Afghanistan gave his ‘just received’ quilt to a young soldier who was heading to an outpost in the middle of winter with only a summer sleeping bag. Another was made for him, BUT this arrived the day before he left to go home. He put it on his young daughter’s bed and wrote to tell Jan-Maree how much it meant to him.  Both of those quilts were not personalised as this was back in the days when our quilts were not personalised. Now that he is out of the army it was time he received something that truly paid tribute to his years of service.

Up the long driveway to his home, in an absolutely beautiful part of our country, the signs of a very dedicated soldier were evident….. statue of a Soldier Rest-on-arms, the Australian flag, the Ode, Rising Sun, plus more were on display.

Capt Carl was told of our visit so was expecting us. We were greeted with his beloved Staffy, Millie. After an afternoon tea of cool drinks and carrot cake (Country bakeries are the best!) we chatted, and Jan-Maree caught up on how life was going. Soon his wife returned from work and youngest daughter joined us … out came the quilt surprise! Capt Carl’s lovely wife had been instrumental in sourcing photos and arranging the afternoon. Well done!

I am so privileged to have met Capt Carl but to see, first-hand, his reaction to seeing his quilt with his service history, countries of deployment, his family and faithful Millie incorporated in it, was just fabulous! He was so grateful, and I scored the most heartfelt hug (Shhhh don’t tell hubby!!!).

Unfortunately, the service he has given to both countries has left him with both physical and mental scars – a quilt is such a small thing really, but it is appreciated and recognises the sacrifices that have been made.

Heather B

Thanks Heather.  I should also mention that Carl's daughter was there and she was also putting in a bid to own the quilt in the future. ;-)

Till next time... keep spreading the word and happy stitching!

A visit to Gallipoli Barracks by Sue-Ellen S

Last week, we had the opportunity to visit Gallipoli Barracks at Enoggera – Headquarters of the 7th Brigade, Australian Army. Jan-Maree, Heather B, Lesley B, Cathy J, Colleen S, Sue-Ellen S and husbands were greeted by Major Tom who briefed us and led us on to our first stop.

Cpl R started the proceedings at the Explosives Detection Dog Section, part of 2 CER – Second Combat Engineers Regiment. He introduced us to ‘Magic’ a beautiful black labrador boy. Cpl R and Magic clearly have a strong bond as do all the handlers and their individual dogs – there being 10 in the unit.

We were told that the dogs are trained by positive input to detect odour and alert accordingly by a passive response rather than excitement or noise. Magic was put through his paces at the training point and reacted immediately at the point where the odour was detected. He lay quite still until his handler praised and rewarded him with his ball – clearly a favourite toy. When they are harnessed they know they are in work mode, but otherwise are up for pats and attention.

The Explosive Detection dogs mainly came from pounds and rehoming as well as former Border Force and gun barrel dogs. The dogs are inter-trained so they will react to other handlers’ commands if the occasion should arise. Cpl M and ‘Casper’ then showed us the same prowess at quickly detecting the explosive material by odour.

We met other dogs in the unit’s exercise yards including Morris, Poppy. Ellen, Stu, and Petra. Dogs are transported in crash-proof crates and upon arrival back from an overseas tour, they go into two weeks quarantine where their handlers, appropriately suited up, look after them.

Cpl R then demonstrated Magic’s ability in the agility yard. Dogs are trained to climb and jump objects of different heights, steepness and angles etc, to jump through simulated windows and traverse various difficult terrain. This training is supported by play and treats to make it all an enjoyable experience. A long table was set up with various surface and Magic was encouraged to ‘sit’ on different uneasy surfaces.

The handlers and their dogs are clearly very attached - one describing his job as ‘the best in the world’.  It was difficult to drag Cathie J on to the next visit and we checked out her car to make sure there wasn’t a dog in there that hadn’t started the day with us.

The next stop was to the 8th/9th Battalion where we were delighted that some of the boys had brought their AHQ quilts to display; great opportunity for photos and to meet recipients.

Members of this Battalion have recently deployed to the Solomon Islands.

Also on display was various weaponry and an HF radio and satellite with a range of between Brisbane and Townsville! The troops were happy and enthusiastic to answer our questions, and we were encouraged to engage and ‘play’. It seems a Janome is not the only machine Heather B is adept at using as photographic evidence of her wielding a Karl Gustav 84mm recoilless rifle proves - even uploaded to the 7th Battalion Facebook Page!

We also got to inspect a Bushmaster

and hear about the Zodiac watercraft capabilities which can transport 8 – 10 fully kitted up personnel with full battle dress. Men are required to have good swimming capabilities should the craft receive fire, first ditching heavy gear. The 40 HP engine really gives this craft some grunt! Cpl S agreed with my suggestion that water skiing might be a possible extracurricular activity in spare time. Cathy and Heather had a lovely chat to one of the Signalmen, who kindly modelled his “field Camo” gear that he had made himself.

As a Signal man his job was “up front” checking out the enemy and relaying information back to his Commander.

We couldn’t leave without paying a visit to the 8/9’s Mascot, Stan the Ram. His wife Lizzie was a little shy to make an appearance.

Onward to the next stop – the 2nd/14th Light Horse where we were given the low-down on the new Boxer CRV (Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle).  This vehicle has taken the place of the ASLAV and is of German design but will be manufactured right here in Redbank, Queensland, we were interested to learn.

This Boxer (named “Absolutely)” has a 30mm automatic cannon (and a light machine gun in the turret), complete armour plating, cameras located strategically to allow for 360-degree situational awareness and laser detectors. Though it cannot go in water like the LAVs, it can traverse any terrain, with 8 x 8 drive and can reach a speed of a little over 100 klms an hour with a range of over 1000 klms.

We had the opportunity to climb on the turret

as well as go inside the Boxer which also contains radio systems and weapon storage and hatches to the turret - quite an amazing experience to see the supporting technology. Trooper S who showed us inside the troop compartment was another soldier who insisted his was the ‘best job in the world’. The Boxer has an operating team of 6 – 4 inside the cabin plus a driver and commander. This would be very cozy, especially in full kit and body armour. On exercise or should they deploy to a war zone, they basically live in this vehicle. Once outside, Cpl B started her up so we could hear how amazingly quiet this Boxer is for its size and demonstrated the 360 degree movement of the turret and when the cannon was pointed our way, we all waved. Trooper B moved the gun up and down to wave back at us…..so cool!

To conclude, Major T hosted us at the Officers’ Mess for lunch and we reflected on what a very special visit we had been lucky enough to enjoy.

Thank you to Jan-Maree and Major Tom for organising this visit. Also to 2 CER, 8th/9th Battalion, 2nd/14th Light Horse Regiment personnel who were so engaging and proud to show us their equipment and skills.

Happy Tuesday Friends!

Welcome to the last blog for September!

Hope to see you there!

Dear Hilary P,

Thank you so much for the quilt and laundry bag! They arrived yesterday. I love the patterns and how the colours come together—it will make a great reminder for my time in the Middle East! Whilst the wet-bulb was reading over 56 degrees here the other day, I am definitely looking forward to the cooler nights in a few months to make good use of the quilt!

Great to hear you were able to get to Jordan and Egypt. I was fortunate enough to get into Jordan this deployment to meet with some of our forward deployed elements (also took the opportunity to visit Petra, the Dead Sea and the historical baptism place of Jesus). Jordan was an amazing country. I have not yet been to Egypt, however we do also send personnel there from time to time.

A bit about myself: I’m a Navy Principal Warfare Officer on an out-of-category land posting—my first non-ship posting in many years. I have a wife and 2 young daughters at home. I am looking forward to getting back home in a few months’ time, but thankfully they are very resilient with the amount of time away. My role at Headquarters Middle East is as the operations officer. I oversee most of our forward support missions to operations throughout the Middle East and I have a small team of about 5 who work around the clock to achieve this; all with families of their own back home.

Thank you again for your support. Keep up the good work and I hope you have enjoyed / are enjoying your road trip!

Yours Aye

...

Good Afternoon Jan-Maree B,

Just sending through an email to Thank you for our new laundry bags! I picked the Sunflower one that also has the Aussie Blue Mountains on the other side. It has already been so beneficial, especially since our washing machines are down currently on the ship, so it’s been great to have a strong bag to carry my laundry back and forth.

Sunflowers are my favourite flowers so as soon as I saw it I had to grab it, I honestly am so appreciative, thank you so much again.

You guys are amazing!

Yours truly,

...

Dear Ruth S,

Thank you so much for the laundry bag I received at the 85 Transport Platoon reunion in Darwin. I look forward to catching up with you in person in the near future.

 Kind Regards

...

(The original thank you letter to Ellen was published in the Grati-Tuesday blog on 18 Jun 24. This photo came through recently.)

Hi Ellen N,

The quilt fits perfectly on the small couch in my room πŸ™‚

Kind Regards,

...

Good morning Rita J,

Firstly I’d like to apologies for the long overdue expression of appreciation. Shortly after receiving your beautiful quilt, the family and I moved house and I lost your contact details.  Thankfully I was able to source them recently through AHQ.

I must say, I was a little nervous opening the package when it arrived, as I’d conjured up some very specific ideas on how I wanted it to look.  You did not disappoint, in fact you exceeded my expectations many times over. I was absolutely delighted when I unfolded the quilt and saw how skilfully you’d captured the very essence of what I had imagined. Your workmanship, attention to detail and overall vision is nothing short of outstanding. I don’t know exactly how to thank you, but I can guarantee you this quilt will be a treasured family heirloom and a constant reminder of my service my families sacrifice, for generations to come.

Thank you so much Rita and all the best with your future quilting/life endeavours, it’s a wonderful gift you have.

Kind regards,

...

Dear Jacqui D,
Thank you for the very lovely small laundry bag with the invite to the Aussie Hero Quilts dinner on 26 October 2024.
I am always amazed at the creativity and great work of the Aussie Hero Quilts volunteers, thank you so much for your support.
The quilts and bags really do make a difference.
I would also like to say thank you for supporting the generations of your family in the ADF (the Air Force), and congratulations to your grand daughter for joining the Army!
I look forward to seeing you at the Aussie Hero Quilts dinner.
Best Wishes

Below is a thank you for a Fallen Warrior Quilt. The top was by Lynn F with blocks by Dorothy C, quilted by Philomena H with embroideries by Inge C.

Dear Volunteers,
Today I received beautiful quilts. One with my late husband's details on it and the other one for myself since I am currently sick and in and out of the hospital. I just wanted to thank you for the amazing work you do. The quilts are so beautiful and also the laundry bag that was made for my husband a few months ago it was amazing. Thank you so much for everything you do.

The following thank is from a veteran presented with a quilt on his 70th Birthday. It was made by Bobbie S, embelished with appliquie by Gail and embroidery by Joan

Phill H,

I forgot to mention how thrilled and appreciative I am to receive your presentation of the Aussie Hero Quilt to me last Saturday night.  I must admit that I was a bit overwhelmed with the whole surprise hence there were quite a few thankyou’s that were overlooked by me.

The quilt is fantastic and what makes it extra special to me is the panel within the quilt with the Federation Star, which is something very dear to my heart.  Given that there are so few ADF veterans that have completed 40+ years of service, I have thought for a long time that there should be a separate gong struck based on the Federation Star as depicted in the panel on the quilt.

Now, it’s great to have this quilt which we will use on those cooler nights, once we are in our new apartment.

Thank you once again,

...

Dear Marianne R,

I’m writing to very sincerely thank you for your support and generosity - both with your time and effort in making such a great laundry bag, as well as the tasty treats! Up-front, I am a total chocaholic so will be rationing it over the next few months. The card you chose with the kangaroos hopping along the levy bank with the horse paddocks in the background looks just like our family property that I grew up on. It made me feel very nostalgic.

Thank you also for the personal touches in the laundry bag. I really appreciate the embroidered unit logo and appliquΓ© phoenix logo. I love the colour combinations as well. Aside from farming, my family have run a sewing machine business for many years - It’s amazing what you can do with modern embroidery machines.

Request List 23 September 2024

Hi All

Five weeks till the Aussie Hero Quilts Annual Thank You Weekend. Remember this is so much more than a dinner. We have six events in three days, all aimed at making sure our visiting volunteers have a good time for a minimal cost. If you haven’t already, make sure you buy your tickets…. via Trybooking.  https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1188651

You don’t want to miss out!

Don’t forget to let me know if you are hoping to bring a quilt or bag along to our Annual Dinner to display. Please email me and let me know. Any of the requests on this list except for the priority requests would be great choices.

I spent a few days in Brisbane last week. Among other things I took a group of volunteers to visit Gallipoli Barracks. Standby for a post all about our visit but in the meantime I thought I would share this photo of Heather.  Yep! We had fun! Standby for a blog post with lots more photos.

I am planning a few more trips around the country to take volunteers to visit military establishments and to meet recipients. I will let you know when things start to be organised.

Now, here is the request list for this week.

I want to acknowledge that a number of the requests on the list this week are quite unusual and certainly not things that many of us would automatically understand. Please know that I have done some googling and if you need some help, I can explain a lot of the requests to you. Most of them have an easy solution so please don’t be afraid to ask me for advise/assistance.

PRIORITY REQUESTS

Oh boy! There are so many options for Priority Requests today.  Firstly, Requests No 1 to 10 are folks on deployment overseas.  Requests 11 to 18 are folks involved in Border Protection and they certainly deserve our support.  Finally, request No 19 is the last of his group. Their requests were put in whilst overseas and they had to wait till they got home to receive them but he has been waiting longer than any of the others so I would love to get his quilt in the mail to him.

POST BY DATE

The post by date for all Requests on this list is 28 Oct 24 please, or earlier if you can manage this.  If you cannot make that date, please let me know. Do reach out if you have any timing issues and we’ll resolve one way or the other. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it please let me know BEFORE you post it.  Also, if this time frame is too tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss, thank you.

Request Information

When selecting a request, remember, you do not have to include everything they have asked for. Footy quilts do not need to have the logo or even the team’s name. Using the team colours is all that is required. Simple is perfectly acceptable.  A number of these requests have given you favourite colours as well as footy teams or other hobbies and interests. It is fine to make a quilt using their favourite colours but please include at least one of their interests.  It is fine to keep it simple.

If there is more than one request on this list that you would be happy to do I suggest that you send me a list of requests and tell me how many you want to be allocated….i.e. one of the following please….  There are always a few requests that everyone wants to do (and I can never pick them) so if the first one you ask for is taken then I can allocate another from your list if I have a list.

Any queries you might have, please don’t hesitate to contact via the AHQ email as per usual with any queries and we will assist you from there.  We may not know the answer, but it will be our pleasure to research and get back to you.

A reminder, when you are ready to post the quilt or laundry bag you’ve created, please use the PMKEYS number given you in any correspondence with the admin team.  This helps the volunteer admin team keep a track of what’s been sent etc.  The PMKEYS number is included in the address details we supply for your recipient e.g.  the 7-digit number in bold below.

CPL Wanda Quilt 8765432

TG 3456

AFPO XX

ADF

Sydney NSW 2890

Also, please use the Aussie Heroes PO Box address on your parcel in the event the parcel is Returned to Sender -  the PO Box is a safe place in the event of  any mishaps with postage.

Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags)

PO Box 248,

Cherrybrook, NSW 2126

Don’t forget to take a photo of your completed quilt or laundry bag to email to AHQ with the name and PMKEYS of the recipient and we can include in the Weekly Dispatches blog and add to the tally of quilts and laundry bags sent off to the troops.  I personally love viewing the photos of those projects dispatched – so inspiring.

If you are using an AHQ supplied prepaid satchel please kindly use the AHQ address for the return address– also for your own packaging – if a parcel is Returned to Sender it is likely we can expedite its journey to the recipient from Sydney.

Please also please hold on to the Tracking number (the pink sticker that you should remove before posting – we’ve experienced mail delays lately (haven’t we all?) and having the Tracking number is very reassuring to keep an eye on the parcel’s progress in arriving at its destination.

Don’t forget, if you look at today’s Request List and need help choosing, please feel free to get in touch to discuss, we will be ready to reply and offer guidance by email. Our goal is to help you find a request that you will be comfortable with doing. If you need a crest etc we may be able to post embroideries / printed fabric images or email some of these to you.

Helpful info may be gleaned here  http://aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com/2019/07/information-post-for-those-that-sew-for.html    I look forward to seeing the photos of completed quilts and LBs when they are ready to post off.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE copy the ENTIRE line if you wish to nominate for a quilt or laundry bag.

For example….

Marvel Theme. Ironman     M       LB      1

This is really important to make sure that neither you nor I copy the wrong number which could lead to me giving you the wrong details for specific request.  If you find it hard to copy and paste, please copy the line out as above.

Decoding The Columns

The first column is the theme or preferences requested.

The second column indicates the gender of the recipient.

The third column is as follows.

B=both quilt and laundry bag (feel free to nominate to JUST do the laundry bag if you wish)

Q= just a quilt

LB = just a laundry bag

F= female

M= male

Please let the Admin crew know if you have any other questions....Just email friendsofahq@gmail.com

Looking forward to seeing what you want to make this week. Happy stitching!

Cheers,

Jan-Maree
