The Aussie Hero Quilts Annual Thank You Weekend.....

Greetings all!

The Aussie Hero Quilts Annual Thank You Weekend is fast approaching, feels a lot faster for those of us on the organising committee, let me tell you.

The big weekend is 25-27 October 24.

Have you bought your tickets yet?

Just a reminder, you can get them here.

Are you new to sewing for us?  If so, please don't let that stop you from joining in on the fun. This is such a great opportunity to meet lots of other volunteers, to learn from them and to share ideas and it is also a great opportunity to meet some of our recipients.

if you are concerned about coming because you "don't know anyone" please don't let that worry you. Everyone is so friendly and it won't be long before you feel right at home.

Would your husband/spouse/friend like to join us?  They would be most welcome. Lots of them join in on the fun of the weekend, some attending all events and some just choosing to attend the dinner and maybe one or two others.

We have a pleasantly packed schedule for the weekend starting with a tour of the Australian War Memorial on the Friday afternoon.  Then you have time to grab some dinner at the hotel or elsewhere before we begin the Volunteer's Gathering which starts at 630 for 7pm at The Rex Hotel.

The evening finishes at a respectable 10pm so you can all get to bed and get your beauty sleep.  If you are new to Aussie Hero Quilts, or simply have not been able to attend a weekend before you are welcome to join me and other "newbies" for breakfast at The Rex.

At 1030am the bus leaves for a day of fun which includes two quilt shops and sights of Canberra bringing you back to the hotel by 330pm so again, you have time to put your feet up, freshen up and put on your glad rags for the main event, the Annual Thank You Dinner.  People start arriving at 630pm and everyone is asked to be seated by 7pm so that our packed schedule for the night can commence.

It will be a fun filled night with one or two speakers, some surprise presentations and of course, our raffles and auctions. We have some great prizes this year including a gorgeous Navy bear made by Janis, quilts made by Joan, Ellen, Philomena and Leanne.  My apologies if I have forgotten anyone. There are other prizes too but I can't remember them all.  Suffice to say there is bound to be something for everyone.

Don't forget we have a discounted price for Volunteers.  You just need to contact me for the special code you need to use when buying your tickets.

We round up the weekend with brunch at Poppy's Cafe at the Australian War Memorial. This is your last opportunity to swap phone numbers, Facebook details, emails etc with all the new friends you have made over the weekend.

Any questions please don't hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email.

Till next time.. DON'T FORGET TO BUY YOUR TICKETS, keep spreading the word and happy stitching!

Love Jan-Maree xx

Grati-Tuesday 30th July 2024

Happy Tuesday Friends!

Welcome to the last post for July.

We have another lot of beautiful messages from far and wide and an awesome image, so grab a cuppa, sit back and relax while you soak up some well deserved gratitude.

Only 88 sleeps away until the Thank You dinner.

...

Good afternoon Gayle W,

I just received the quilt you kindly sent!

I love it so much, you absolutely nailed the design.

I am from the Gold Coast and love the beach, diving and surfing so the quilt was very suited to me!

The Solomon Islands have some great beaches too!

It’s great to hear you are keeping busy in retirement.

All the hard work you put into these quilts does not go unnoticed. It means so much to us.

Thank you so much!!

Hey Jenny R,

I wanted to give you a big thank you for the amazing laundry bag you made for me I love it!

Also thank you for your letter It really hit home for me when I was reading about your past and current serving family members and all they have done for our country, Since you told me about yourself I’d like to tell you about me.

I’m 22 years old and will be 23 by the time I get back to Australia, I was born and raised in Sydney and am of Greek heritage. My grandparents came to Australia in the 1960s on 2 different boats and met in Sydney. I joined the Army cadets when I was 14. We did something with the Navy cadets and Navy just appealed to me more so I transferred until I was 16, by that time I decided to leave school in year 10 and get a trade which I did for 5 years.

At the age of 21, I decided to take that leap of faith and chase a new career, as being a sheet metal worker wasn’t going to cut it for me I wanted more adventure and to do something I could be proud of in my life so I thought back to when I was in Navy cadets and I remember really enjoying it. I joined as a Combat Systems Operator (CSO) and after 1 year of training I went to my first ship HMAS Canberra and did a 3 month deployment before posting on to HMAS Hobart which I’ll be on for the next 2 years.

My Aunty and Uncle were both in the Army reserves when they were my age for 4 years so they’re the only ones in my family that can remotely relate to what my job is like and the challenges that come with it, and they’ve supported me all the way.

When I get back to Sydney I’m going to try to get my first home with a deposit ready to go, I’m a bit nervous about it but I know it’s the right move to set myself up for success in the future. Again thank you so much for the handmade laundry bag and the letter that came with it. I’ll be keeping both for years to come.

Kind Regards,

...

Good Afternoon Susan P,

May I please express my sincerest thanks for all of your efforts and dedication to Aussie Hero Quilts – especially regarding the absolutely exquisite Laundry bag that you have made for me personally.

I was really touched by the obvious care and personal connection that you had with this particular project, especially noting your father’s drawing which takes pride of place in the centre. I was also thrilled to read that the embroidery was completed by someone (Joan B) who also shared a personal connection to Arunta.

Again thank you so much for your dedication, care and affiliation you continue to share with Defence, Navy and HMAS Arunta in particular.

With my every good wish to both yourself and your husband

CONQUER OR DIE

I remain your obedient servant

...

Dear Pennie T,

I cannot thank you enough for the wonderful quilt that has recently arried. Both you and Skye have such a talent, and I am so very grateful that you've been willing to make the effort to craft such a lovely piece.

At the moment the quilt covers my 3-seat sofa in my office and is a wonderful conversation starter for all those that visit, but when I leave this posting at the end of the year it will likely find a home on my living room couch and become a well-loved family heirloom.

Thank you for your generosity and I assure you I will put the quilt to good use.

Take care.

...

Until next week keep your letters, emails and photos coming in.

Tuesday's would be so totally boring without them!

Request List 29 July 2024

Hi All

Emails… I have two email addresses. I know that can be a bit confusing but it can be necessary at times for privacy and security.

friendsofahq@gmail.com Please use this email address for most Aussie Hero info.  For example, to take on a request, to notify us that you are posting off details.  This email address can be accessed by a number of our admin volunteers.

Jan-maree@aussieheroquilts.com.au Please use this info if you need me to answer a question or need to pass on info to me. I am the only person with access to this email address.

Hope this makes it helps to avoid confusion.

Here is the request list for this week.

Happy hunting.  I hope you can find something that tickles your fancy. Some of the requests have quite a bit of detail in their request but most of them are not too difficult once you know what they are asking for and I can give you a lot of help/guidance to make them a lot easier.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you are unsure what someone is asking for. Generally, the requests are not as difficult as you might think.

PRIORITY REQUESTS

Request No 1 is a request for laundry bags for a group of indigenous soldiers involved in the Indigenous Development Program.  We won’t get names in time, and also there might be last minute additions, so all bags will simply have a patch for initials on them.  Additionally, these bags need to be posted to Darwin but we are unable to provide postage for them.  If you are happy with that then it would be great if you could commit to make one of these 30 bags.

Requests No’s 2,3,4,5 – all of these requests are for people deployed overseas. It goes without saying that we would like to get these requests in the mail sooner than later.

Finally, Request No’s 6 to 23 included are for folk who are either currently deployed, or who have deployed and are now home. Mail can be unreliable for some locations so the option is to send their parcels to their home addresses.  It would be great if these people could receive their parcels soon after returning home if possible. For that reason, I have put these on the priority list.

All of these requests need to be in the mail by 2 Sep but sooner is better if at all possible.

POST BY DATE

The post by date for all Requests on this list is 2 Sep 24 please, or earlier if you can manage this.  If you cannot make that date, please let me know. Do reach out if you have any timing issues and we’ll resolve one way or the other. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it please let me know BEFORE you post it.  Also, if this time frame is too tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss, thank you.

Request Information

When selecting a request, remember, you do not have to include everything they have asked for. Footy quilts do not need to have the logo or even the team’s name. Using the team colours is all that is required. Simple is perfectly acceptable.  A number of these requests have given you favourite colours as well as footy teams or other hobbies and interests. It is fine to make a quilt using their favourite colours but please include at least one of their interests.  It is fine to keep it simple.

If there is more than one request on this list that you would be happy to do I suggest that you send me a list of requests and tell me how many you want to be allocated….i.e. one of the following please….  There are always a few requests that everyone wants to do (and I can never pick them) so if the first one you ask for is taken then I can allocate another from your list if I have a list.

Any queries you might have, please don’t hesitate to contact via the AHQ email as per usual with any queries and we will assist you from there.  We may not know the answer, but it will be our pleasure to research and get back to you.

A reminder, when you are ready to post the quilt or laundry bag you’ve created, please use the PMKEYS number given you in any correspondence with the admin team.  This helps the volunteer admin team keep a track of what’s been sent etc.  The PMKEYS number is included in the address details we supply for your recipient e.g.  the 7-digit number in bold below.

CPL Wanda Quilt 8765432

TG 3456

AFPO XX

ADF

Sydney NSW 2890

Also, please use the Aussie Heroes PO Box address on your parcel in the event the parcel is Returned to Sender -  the PO Box is a safe place in the event of  any mishaps with postage.

Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags)

PO Box 248,

Cherrybrook, NSW 2126

Don’t forget to take a photo of your completed quilt or laundry bag to email to AHQ with the name and PMKEYS of the recipient and we can include in the Weekly Dispatches blog and add to the tally of quilts and laundry bags sent off to the troops.  I personally love viewing the photos of those projects dispatched – so inspiring.

If you are using an AHQ supplied prepaid satchel please kindly use the AHQ address for the return address– also for your own packaging – if a parcel is Returned to Sender it is likely we can expedite its journey to the recipient from Sydney.

Please also please hold on to the Tracking number (the pink sticker that you should remove before posting – we’ve experienced mail delays lately (haven’t we all?) and having the Tracking number is very reassuring to keep an eye on the parcel’s progress in arriving at its destination.

Don’t forget, if you look at today’s Request List and need help choosing, please feel free to get in touch to discuss, we will be ready to reply and offer guidance by email. Our goal is to help you find a request that you will be comfortable with doing. If you need a crest etc we may be able to post embroideries / printed fabric images or email some of these to you.

Helpful info may be gleaned here  http://aussieheroquilts.blogspot.com/2019/07/information-post-for-those-that-sew-for.html    I look forward to seeing the photos of completed quilts and LBs when they are ready to post off.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE copy the ENTIRE line if you wish to nominate for a quilt or laundry bag.

For example….

Marvel Theme. Ironman     M       LB      1

This is really important to make sure that neither you nor I copy the wrong number which could lead to me giving you the wrong details for specific request.  If you find it hard to copy and paste, please copy the line out as above.

Decoding The Columns

The first column is the theme or preferences requested.

The second column indicates the gender of the recipient.

The third column is as follows.

B=both quilt and laundry bag (feel free to nominate to JUST do the laundry bag if you wish)

Q= just a quilt

LB = just a laundry bag

F= female

M= male

Please let the Admin crew know if you have any other questions....Just email friendsofahq@gmail.com

Cheers,

Jan-Maree
