Mystery Quilt Update plus......

Hi all,
I hope you have all had a good weekend whatever you have been up to.

Ooo Ahh - my first real radio interview.

For anyone who might be interested, tomorrow morning Ray Garreffa from Adelaide's best variety station, Coast FM Coast FM 88.7FM, will be interviewing me at 1115am Adelaide time.  Ray told me that Coast FM is able to be picked on the net via Streaming and I managed to listen in to the station myself so if I can work it out, I am sure you can.  You just need to go here and click on the box in the bottom right hand corner and select Live Streaming (Low Band) or (High Band).
Wish me luck and I would love to know how you think it went if you hear it. Be kind!

The name of the Mystery Quilt is important so that I can make sure you get the right information.

Remember those little girly pink and pink and purple blocks you sent in?  Well I am almost ready to reveal the results and they are pretty cute.  Just another week or so till we know they have been received.

Time for another update on the H blocks.  I think there are maybe a few more to come in but so far these are looking awesome.

And to end tonight

I shared this on Facebook but I wanted my Non-Facebook reading ladies and gents to enjoy this too so I am sharing it again.

Sometimes even I need a bit of encouragement, and when I do it is often something like this that comes along and lifts me up again.  This is part of a request email and I had to share it with all the wonderful people who sew for us.

"It was so exciting and touching to arrive in Afghanistan and hear about the amazing Aussie Hero Quilts.  It's wonderful to have such a linkage with Australians when you are over here..........
.......Finally, while I'm sure you and the organisation are aware, everyone here talks very warmly about the hero quilts, with everyone pulling out a photo to show off their quilt when you mention the program. Congratulations and thanks for such a wonderful idea and all the efforts"

Remember, I  and my Aussie Hero Friends never get to see the reaction to an AHQ box arriving, nor the unguarded response of a recipient seeing their quilt, which they may, or may not have been expecting, as they open it up!   That is okay, it is par for the course, but  reading about people carrying a photo of their quilt for show and tell when the subject comes up.......well let's just say, it is sandy here where I am today!

 :-D

Till next time.................keep spreading the word and happy stitching!  JMxx

Weekly Dispatches 25 October

G'day all.
For those of you in Adelaide you might like to listen in on Monday morning as I am going to be interviewed on Adelaide's Coast FM at 1115 their time.  I will be telling the Aussie Hero story - my favourite story to tell, about some of my favourite people and that includes the Aussie Hero Friends and our wonderful Aussie Heroes.

In other business

There is one month left to buy tickets to attend the dinner in Brisbane.  All the information you need about the dinner can be found here but most important

A copy of the deposit (EFT) receipt needs to be sent to Angela George to confirm your reservation.

Don't leave it to the last minute
I am really looking forward to meeting those of you who I have only met via email and phone up until now.

Laundry Bag Requests.

I received a request today from a RAAF unit that has just discovered us.  They have been proactive enough to request laundry bags (and quilts but I will deal with those later) for all 30 of their soon to deploy troops.  Anyone who would like to sew some laundry bags with initials on them please let me know.  We can make whatever we like as I have been given no preferences for these guys but remember that are all RAAFies.

And so to this week's Dispatches...

The tally so far.

17 quilts this week and 23 laundry bags.

1157 quilts and 2115 laundry bags for 2013.

2165 quilts and 3481 laundry bags in total.

This is one of those delightful quilts that pop up unexpectedly without notice!  Love it.

This quilt was made by  Myriam of the RAAF Base Amberley Craft Group.

This quilt was another team effort.  The fabric donated by Sandra P, the top was pieced by Angela, the backing dyed and donated by Judy C and quilted by Barb.

Another joint effort. I designed and cut out this quilt top and then Jenni started sewing it up at one of our Penrith sewing days.  Kerry embroidered the badge for us which was sent to Jenni to include.  Once the top was completed Jenni quilted and bound it and sent it off......the sending off was the exciting bit though.  After being evacuated twice due to the bushfires one day, Jenni managed to get the quilt in the mail the next day, just before the post was cleared early due to the fires!  Great effort Jenni in more ways than one!

Joan made this laundry bag with the help of the emboidered patch that was conceived by me but embroidered by Michele from Victoria.

At last I can show you this one.  We did this as a Mystery Quilt for someone who has been watching the blog for MONTHS and who put themselves on my request list well before her deployment.  Well, she has received her quilt and loves it.  The blocks were sent to Brisbane and were put together by Joanne making a great front and back and then Joanne quilted it as well.
 What a gorgeous quilt!

Thanks on Thursdays

Hi all.

Just a quick announcement.  The next Penrith Sewing Day on will be on 3 November.  Please BYO lunch and sewing machine.  I will provide all materials. I think we might be having a laundry bag sewing marathon but I will confirm that closer to time.  Please can you let me know if you plan to come so that I can be prepared.

.......<<<<<<<*>>>>>>>.......

On Thank yous and Expectations.
I have come to think of Aussie Heroes as a circle of appreciation.  We appreciate the service and sacrifice of our service people, but what is really lovely is that time and time again they show us how much they appreciate what we do and I have to say reading those thank you messages never gets old to me!

Having said that I thought it was timely to remind you that it is highly likely that we will not get as many thank you messages in the coming months as we have in the past.

I don't know the ins and outs of the logistics involved in closing down and handing over the base at Tarin Kot, but if you think about it, equipment is being removed on a daily basis and that means facilities are being reduced.  The postal service has already been reduced.  Shops which sold snacks and toiletries, the little necessities of life, have been closed or are not re-stocking.

You have to imagine that the troops are doing more with less.  That, no doubt, also means that the number of computer terminals will eventually start to dwindle and so on.

As all the facilities that help to make like comfortable, and those which help to compensate for being so far from family, are slowly removed, then what we do becomes even more important. Our quilts and laundry bags, as a Commander once wrote, are a constant visible reminder of the support they have from back home.  They are comforting practical reminders that the Aussie public cares about them.

It is up to us to really mean it when we say "I don't do it for the thanks" and keep going regardless of whether we hear back from our recipient or not.  When you read the thank you messages on the blog many times the same phrases of appreciation are repeated.
To me that says that whether we hear from a recipient or not, they will be feeling much the same.

I can't share all that happens behind the scenes with Aussie Heroes, as in some cases it is too sensitive, or possibly too premature, but suffice to say I am left in absolutely no doubt that the men and women on the ground and on the ships with Operation Slipper, plus those on Peacekeeping Missions in South Sudan and the Sinai love what we are doing and are very grateful and in coming months I hope that will become even more apparent.

Hope you enjoy these messages as much as I did!
....

Jennidee and Michael,

I was humbled today to receive the ANZAC Cove Quilt that you both painstakingly constructed for me. The quilt is a wonderful representation of the ANZAC Cove and sacrifice that soldiers make during long deployments away from their loved ones. I particularly liked the inclusion of the lone pine as well. I was once posted to the Soldier Career Management Agency (which was at the time based out of Fort Queenscliff in Victoria) and they actually have a pine tree that was grown out of an acorn from the those pine trees at the Nek at Gallipoli. It is located on the right hand side of the main entry to the Fort behind the guard house.

The Aussie Hero Quilt initiative is a wonderful thing that I hope continues long after the Australian Defence Force departs Afghanistan. The Soldiers and Officers within my Unit in Afghanistan have been the beneficiary of many such quilts and laundry bags from this initiative.

Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for this gift. It is a beautiful quilt that both myself and my family will cherish forever as a reminder of my time in Afghanistan and the support that Australia give to deployed Defence personnel.

Pam is an airforce Mum who was instrumental in the starting of the Sewing Days at Penrith.  Some of her son's mates will be deploying in the future and so Pam set about making them quilts and they were given to them in person on the weekend.  Here are two of them.  Love those smiles.

....

The following thank you is for a nautical quilt that was cut out by me, pieced by Dasha and Clare at a sewing day and quilted by Debbie in Queensland.  A real joint effort.

Hi Jan-Maree,

My quilt arrived today and it's beautiful, I love it. Please pass my sincere thanks to Dash, Clare, and Debbie for this lovely quilt.

Thanks to yourself also for your part in this, and on behalf of all of us here thank you for what you are doing for us. To know that members of the public care this much for our welfare that they give up so much of their own personal time is heart warming. These quilts mean so much to us because over here we down't have a lot to call our own, this personalizes our rooms and makes it a little bit like home.

Anyway, once again thanks for all you do for us, I will be sure to tell everyone at home what you guys are doing for us every chance I get.

Warm regards.
.....

Hello Stephanie T,

I would like to say thank you so much for the quilt that I have received off you. It has really liven up my bed.
So I have been deployed now for 4 months, only 4 months to go and I will be home.
Once again thank you so much.
.....

This fellow requested several quilts for himself and his mates and he sent me a facebook message to let me know that they have all been received.

We have all now received our AMAZING quilts and could not be happier. I would once again just like to thank you and all the other quilters that you have.  You all do such an amazing job and it really does make a big difference to us over here.  So, once again thank you and God Bless.
.....

Shirley,
I have located some parcels that were put aside for me last month which you sent back in August and I am writing to let you know that they have arrived and are available to members.
I pick out a favourite laundry bag that I hang on the wall of my office so people notice that I have them. The only problem is that people keep taking them because they like them too.
That said, one of your laundry bags became my favourite and so is now displayed on my office wall. It's the "Aussie surf" one. I suspect it won't be long before someone claims it as their own. But that's half the joy :-)
My tour ends soon so I will be attending the AHQ function at the end of November.
Thank you for the post card. I can honestly say that the laundry bags will be useful and should have no problems finding a good home for them.
Kind regards

The following people have sent off quilts and laundry bags this week. If you think you should be on this list for some reason please don't hesitate to let me know. It is so easy to be interrupted when entering data and saving files and sending emails so it is also easy to accidentally leave someone off the list.

Big reminder!  PLEASE when you email me to let me know that you have posted a quilt off can you please give me the person's first and last name.   It makes it soooo much easier for me to find them on my list.  Some of you have made so many quilts now that I can nolonger search on your name alone nor is searching on "the nurse quilt" or "the Maroons quilt" practical.  Your help in this matter is much appreciated.

That is all from me for today- I am off to sew!!!!

Till next time..............keep spreading the word and happy stitching!  JMxx

23 October 2013

Happy Mail 23 October

Greetings all.

Just before I proceed with tonight's normal program I have some spaces left in the latest mystery Quilt if any of you are interested.  Just send me a stamped self-address envelope to PO BOX 248, Cherrybrook NSW 2126 and I will send you instructions and fabric.

Time for some happy mail and this first quilt top just does not get much happier as far as I am concerned. When I received this one from Karen B I put it up on the design wall and just sat back and enjoyed it for a few minutes. How gorgeous!  Love the colour in this one.

Karen B also sent this quilt top

And this one.  Great quilt tops Karen!

Karen is also the first to send in a Block of the Month block for this one.  LOL  I don't think you all like this one too much.  Oh well, you can't win them all.    The next month's BOM might be more up your alley - it is a reprise of a block we did last year. Wait and see.

Janine sent in these great BOM blocks from September.  Love these colours too.

Finally Lynn sent in this two quilt tops.  Simple two colour quilts but they have a charm all of their own.

Tonight I can show you the prize you will win if your laundry bag is chosen as the best on the night of the dinner. This was also donated by the fellow I call the Money Honey.  If you don't know who I mean then you can check out this post.  I haven't had a chance to have this one valued yet.  It is not easy to find a jeweler who will give me a value without charging me so I am still looking in to it.  What I can tell you is that this was bought in Kandahar and the chain is silver.  Personally I think it is gorgeous and I would be quite happy to wear it.

I won't show you any of the laundry bags that have arrived with Angela as yet but here are a few to inspire you.  Remember you can make one in a military theme, an Aussie theme or a funny one.  Don't you love the animal crackers on the inside of this one.

Everyone, even those who cannot attend, is invited to make a laundry bag. You can make an Aussie themed one, a military themed one or a fun one.

All laundry bags are to be sent to

Angela (Aussie Heroes)
PO Box 5411
Brendale  QLD  4500

Please do not send them to me
I don't want to have to carry them or send them to Brisbane.

Till next time............keep spreading the word and happy stitching.  JMxx
