BLOCK OF THE MONTH TUTORIAL SEPTEMBER 2019

DEFENCE FORCE COLOUR BLOCKS

In October 2018, the Block of the Month Tutorial was for ARMY Blocks
and the response was wonderful.
Contributors sent more of those
blocks than any other Block of the Month.
I have used these blocks in SO MANY ways…as patchwork blocks eg. Post & Rail,
as wide borders, narrow borders and cut small as joiners...see pictures below.

They’ve been great for making Soldiers' Quilts and great for quilts where the
Recipient has asked for any "earthy" subject.
My supply of them is running low and so, this month I’m asking
the BOM Squad to make more of these ARMY colour blocks
OR
make the same blocks in BLUE FABRICS for
the NAVY and AIR FORCE Recipients' Quilts.

SUITABLE FABRICS TO USE IN EITHER COLOUR WAY
Plain fabric
Printed designs - preferably not pretty floral prints
Textured prints
Stripes, spots and geometric prints
Tone-on-tone fabrics
Bali prints

These are some of the fabrics I use to create ARMY quilts.

I’ve chosen them by picking out each of the colours in the Camouflage
print or matching with a part of one of the ARMY uniforms.
Click one of these links to see images that might be helpful in choosing colours

These are some fabrics that would be suitable for the AIR FORCE and NAVY quilts.

Choose six fabrics in one of the colour ways, either
ARMY COLOURS
 or
NAVY & AIR FORCE BLUES

They should have contrast between them, so the fabrics don’t blend in with each
other.  The “stripes” of colour should be defined.

USE ONLY 100% COTTON FABRIC
USE 1/4 INCH SEAM ALLOWANCE

Cut a 2 inch strip of each fabric from selvedge to selvedge

Join them together, keeping one edge level

Press all the seam allowances firmly in one direction

Cut three pieces 10 ½ inch wide and leave the uneven edge on the fourth piece - it doesn't matter what length it is.  ALL BLOCKS are trimmed to make them the size needed for each quilt that is designed.

Alternatively, cut 6 pieces of suitable fabrics 2 inch x 12 inch

Join them together, keeping one edge level

Press the seam allowances firmly in one direction

THE BLOCKS WILL BE RECTANGLES
