On Friday 25 Oct, as part of our Annual Thank You Weekend, members of the Aussie Heroes Quilt Group took part in a memorable tour of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. This tour was a special opportunity for the group, to deepen their connection with the history and sacrifices behind their work. Our guide was Rod and he gave us a fabulous tour telling us stories about various campaigns. We would have loved to spend more time with him, hearing stories from his extensive knowledge.
The day began with a guided tour through the Memorial’s exhibits, from WWI trenches to modern-day peacekeeping missions. The members were moved by the stories of bravery and resilience that their quilts honour. A highlight of the tour was the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. We marvelled at the fantastic mosaics.
Seeing the Changi Quilt was another highlight.
For the group, it was not only a chance to reflect on the past
but also to strengthen their bond with one another. This shared experience will
no doubt inspire new ideas for future quilts, drawing directly from the
rich history displayed at the Memorial.
It was a day filled with pride, gratitude, and a deeper
appreciation for the heroes—both past and present—who shape Australia’s
military legacy.
