Aussie Hero Quilts Annual Thank You Weekend.

G'day all,

Have you booked your tickets for the upcoming Aussie Hero Quilts Annual Thank You Weekend yet?

I know I keep telling you what a fun time you will have and how worthwhile it will be but I thought you should hear from a few others. Here are a couple of quick messages from Jo and Bobbie....

If you are a volunteer for AHQ and haven’t been to the Annual get together in Canberra – you are seriously missing out!  The main drawcard is the fabulous dinner – held at the Rex Hotel for the second year. Food is very tasty, refreshments are available and wonderful quilts are on display. The atmosphere is very friendly between sewers, ADF personnel and other guests and conversation is easy as people swap stories, contacts and AHQ experiences.

There are also auctions – traditional bidding as well as silent. This is a fundraiser for AHQ and the competition can be nail-biting!

There are usually serving defence force people who have received quilts / Laundry bags and it is a moving experience if you meet one of your recipients or even watch someone receive a quilt on the night. There are many high-ranking officers from each area and the respect they hold for AHQ and Jan-Maree is obvious. It is a very enjoyable evening. It is also great to meet J-M and some of the volunteers who keep the request list, gratis and dispatch information available.

Do yourself a favour and buy your ticket now!

Hello,

Are you thinking you would like to go to the AHQ Thank You weekend in Canberra but you are on your own? Don’t let that deter you as you will have a wonderful time staying at the Rex Hotel. A meet and greet on Friday evening, afternoon tea with the Governor General, a bus trip that’s no to be missed, a fabulous dinner and finally breakfast at Poppies on Sunday morning.

Don’t forget all the other lovely ladies (and gentlemen) you will meet, some of them will be on their own too, as well as a few of our serving Defence Personnel.

Now, who doesn’t like a trip to a patchwork shop? Lots of fabrics to choose from, new friends to chat to and share the experience with. Throw in some sightseeing and you have a great day out. Don’t miss the bus!

Everyone is very friendly, and you will be made welcome the same as I was on my first AHQ weekend.

I hope you decide to make the trip to Canberra, make new friends and just enjoy the whole experience.

From Bobbie.

Quilt Presentation!!!

Every once in a while we have the honour and privilege of doing something special for someone.

Today we travelled to surprise my brother.
He had no idea we were coming and had no idea we had put his name forward for an Aussie Hero Quilts (and Laundry Bags)  quilt.
We found him at the RSL club where he goes to the raffles.

Organised earlier, when the raffles finished they called him up and his son and I went up together.

We thanked my brother for his service to his country. Told him how proud we are of him. Then unravelled his beautiful quilt and letter of thanks.

No one knew he was a Vietnam Vet and we were so moved by the people who came to him and thanked him for his service.

He is getting more frail, but we had a lovely lunch together and some
laughs.
When I saw his face as we gave him his quilt I realised how much these Vets need a thankyou.

I saw respect on people's faces today.
