Aussie Hero Quilts Requests 25 May 2020

Hi All

CHANGES ARE COMING:
Due to my impending cancer treatment changes will be coming but NOT YET.  I will let you know when. I am in the process of training people to take over but no one is ready yet and whilst I am symptom free (at the moment) and then whilst I am well enough I will still continue to work. You will be advised as soon as necessary when things change. Please keep reading the blog to be aware of any changes.

Don’t forget, if you look at the list and need help choosing please feel free to let me know.  I know it can be overwhelming and I am more than happy to give you some advice and find a request that you will be comfortable with doing.

More huge thanks to our ADF members available to be deployed to carry out a myriad of tasks that need to be conducted and we are going to do our bit by letting them know that their services are appreciated.

Operation COVID-19 Assist Laundry Bags

We still need more COVID 19 LBs if you have the time and willingness to make them.  Again, you will need to post these at your own expense - thank you. The most economic way is using a pre-paid satchel. You can fit 5-6 in a 3KG satchel or 12 in a 5KG satchel.  And we need MASCULINE or GENDER NEUTRAL

We are getting lovely feedback from recipients of these laundry bags which you can read in our Gratitude Post on Tuesdays.

Here is a wonderful example, it is a bit long but it is worth it.

I am the proud owner of a piece of your sewing talent and would like to say a big thank you.  It was a great surprise when I was walked into a room and directed to pick a bag.
 The room contained a vast array of colourful and very large robust high quality washing bags.

I was so confused as after spending 33 years in the Army and being on various Operations I had never been told to take my pick of something that somebody has made because they wanted to thank me for doing my job. This does not happen and you have made an old Aussie Digger smile and take a moment to think that others in Australia do care about our defence forces.

What you have done is so so nice. I will be honest during my career and being a SGT I have seen many soldiers who are spending long periods away from their loved ones.
Some for the first time in their lives and it is the little things that happen that give them joy, make them smile and write home about. We work in places that are not on the top 10 destinations for a holiday.   Or as is the case today we are in our home town helping to ensure that Australians stay safe and healthy

What you and Aussie Quilt Hero’s have done and achieved makes me proud to wear the uniform of my country.

I have been away on Operations on 3 occasions during Xmas in my career.
Now yes we do get mail and yes loved ones send us stuff.  It is when you have a parade for Xmas with your troops and you call out the names as parcels come of a mail bag.  You see their faces light up and then you watch them cry as they show off photos of family or share food from home.
You also see those that get nothing from home and they slowly walk away from the group to be alone.

What you are doing is allowing Australian defence force personnel to all get a surprise present showing we are all equal and others care. Thank you.  I always get my family to send Whiz Fizz packets wherever I am away and the troops know mail is in when they see their SGT sitting at a table smiling with a plastic spoon in his mouth savouring the sweet tasting lollies.

From the bottom of my heart thank you for your effort and thank you for helping us out.
I will take this bag on all of my future travels knowing that out there somewhere others care.  Plus I want to show it off.

Hard to believe that our laundry bags touch people so deeply isn’t it but this is not a one off.

Priority Quilts

Requests 28-31 inclusive are our priority quilts. I won’t give you a post by date but if you can do them fairly quickly and then check before posting them that would be great. COVID Is making it hard to estimate posting times.   Thank you!

The post by date for all items on this list is 29 June please. If you cannot make that date please let me know.

LET ME REITERATE, I DO NOT WANT TO ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO TAKE ANY UNNECESSARY RISKS WHATSOEVER TO CONTINUE SEWING FOR US. I DON’T WANT THAT AND THE MEN AND WOMEN WE SEEK TO SERVE DO NOT WANT THAT.

PLEASE note the date and let me know if you have any problems getting your quilt/LB away on time. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it please let me know BEFORE you post it.  Also, if this time frame is too tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss.

FOR ANY NEW VOLUNTEERS

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE copy the ENTIRE line if you wish to nominate for a quilt or laundry bag.
For example….
Marvel Theme. Ironman     M       LB      1

This is really important to make sure that neither you nor I copy the wrong number which could lead to me giving you the wrong details for specific request.  If you find it hard to copy and paste, please copy the line out as follows…

The first column is the theme or preferences requested.
The second column indicates the gender of the recipient.
The third column is as follows.

B=both quilt and laundry bag (feel free to nominate to JUST do the laundry bag if you wish)
Q= just a quilt
LB = just a laundry bag
F= female
M= male

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Cheers

Jan-Maree
