Hi All
It is times like this that I am so grateful to my mother and my grandmother
for raising me to do things with my hands especially teaching me to sew. I am
also grateful for the awesome community that is Aussie Heroes. As a group we
have been observing social distancing for eight years now, with all of us in
different states and cities and country towns, and yet we have managed to forge
a community. Now is the time to really pull together and support each other.
I know many of us are in one form of lockdown or another, whilst others
have to go to work in trying conditions, but regardless Aussie Heroes is going
to continue in whatever form we can. Let me say at the outset though, I DO NOT WANT TO
ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO TAKE ANY UNNECESSARY RISKS WHATSOEVER TO CONTINUE SEWING
FOR US. I DON’T WANT THAT AND THE MEN AND WOMEN WE SEEK TO SERVE DO NOT WANT
THAT.
I think we all need to keep busy. We need to focus on what we CAN DO
and not what we can’t. Doing something
positive is good for your mental health.
It is also good for our sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen to know
that we are continuing to support them.
At the moment I am not expecting the Post Office to shut down. None of the countries that have gone into
lock down seem to have shut down their postal service so hopefully ours will
remain open and functioning as well. Mail
to the troops is continuing, though it is being disrupted somewhat but that is
all I know.
As long as you can receive mail, we can still get crests and badges to
you.
I have dramatically simplified many of the requests in order to enable
more volunteers to be able to sew along with us. I have left some personalised
quilts and bags on the list because I know some of you like a bit more of a
challenge and because I know there is a good chance many of you creative souls
will come up with a way to meet those requests in some way.
That said, there are plenty of requests that simply require a crest or
badge, which will be sent to you, and a quilt can be fashioned around it.
Your quilts can be simple squares or strips but please do not resort to
quilting one large piece of fabric as a topper. If there is one thing we will mostly
have in abundance over the next few weeks it is going to be time so blocks and
strips or other pieced designs are the order of the day please.
The post by date for all items on this list is 27 April please. If you
cannot make that date please let me know.
PLEASE note the date and let me know if you have any problems getting
your quilt/LB away on time. In fact, if you are going to be late posting it
please let me know BEFORE you post it. Also, if this time frame is too
tight for you, there are options, just email me to discuss.
IF
YOU CANNOT GET TO THE POST OFFICE
My preferred option is that we continue to post to the troops for as long
as we can but I know that might be difficult for some of you.
If you cannot get to the Post Office and do not have someone who can go
for you, then I still encourage you to keep sewing. You never know, there may be someone in your
area who can pick up your mail from your front door (no contact) and deliver it
to the PO for you. We can at least try that. LET ME KNOW
If that does not work then still keep sewing. At some point the air will
clear and the lockdowns will ease and we will need to play catch up. I ask that,
for now, if you cannot get to the PO then please don’t take on specific requests
with post by dates. Rather start sewing
beautiful, gender neutral quilts and bags that we can allocate and send once things
clear up. Stay positive and share with
me what you are doing. I think we might write some special posts and show
people what they can look forward to once the Post Offices opens up.
