BLOCK OF THE MONTH April 2018

GREEN & GOLD 'AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE'  BLOCK

In this month when we commemorate ANZAC, we're making 

Blocks of the Month using our National colours.  

Our Aussie Heroes often ask for these colours, or something typically Australian 

and these blocks on their own or in conjunction with the Aussie Diamond Blocks 

from December/January, will make beautiful Australian theme Quilts.

They will also work well for Quilts for Recipients who ask for the Wallabies 

to be represented on their Quilts.  

Please be guided by the Wallabies' Team colours in choosing your fabrics.

Tone-on-tone prints can be used.
Plains can be used.

Other prints that add interest and texture but don't introduce 

another dominant colour, are also suitable.

Please don't use lemon or very bright yellow or limey yellow.
Please don't use lime green or "bright" green.

These are some of the Quilt Designs that can be created, using these blocks.

Please remember...

Use 100% cotton fabrics

Use 1/4 inch seam in block construction

Do not trim off any uneven edges as every block will 

be trimmed to make it the size required for each quilt design

Let's get going...

CUTTING OUT THE BLOCK

I started by cutting two green strips 2 3/4 inch wide across the fabric from selvedge to selvedge, 

then laid one on the other and cut the following lengths, 

9 1/2 inch        7 1/4 inch       5 inch

resulting in two pieces of each size

I then cut five 2 3/4 inch squares

I then cut a strip of gold fabric 2 3/4 inch wide 

I cut ten 2 3/4 inch squares from the strip

CONSTRUCTING THE BLOCK

Set aside three of the green squares and two of the gold squares

Draw a diagonal line across each of the other 8 gold squares on the wrong side of the fabric

Position a gold square onto the end of each green strip of fabric, with right sides of fabric together.  The gold and green squares will fit neatly together.

Be sure to position the diagonal line as shown in the picture.

Pin as shown.

Sew along each pencil line.

Position ruler with the quarter inch line ON THE SEAM and cut off the small triangles as shown in the picture and discard.

Press all seam allowances to one side.

LAY OUT THE BLOCK

Use the following picture to lay out the block before sewing together.

Make five rows by joining the rectangles and squares that make up a row.

Press all seam allowances to one side.

Lastly, join each of the rows together and press the seam allowances to one side.

And there it is, our 'Aussie, Aussie, Aussie' block.
