Block of the Month May 2017

Post and Rail
This is a traditional block that many people will know.  It will make very eye catching quilts.
It's quick to make, so I'm hoping our wonderful block makers will
produce many of these to make quilts for our Aussie Heroes.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONTRIBUTION

The colours for this block are BLACK, WHITE AND TEAL

BLACK FABRIC suggestions...
  • Should be basically black
  • A black background with white print pattern would be good - see the sample block
  • Black tone-on-tone
  • Black Bali print
WHITE FABRIC suggestions...
  • Should be very white
  • A white background with a black print on it would be good - see the sample block
  • White tone-on-tone
TEAL FABRIC - teal is a tricky colour to define!  It's not BLUE and it's not GREEN but it's the beautiful rich colour somewhere in between the two.  Here's a few in my collection.
  • Any print that is basically teal
  • Tone-on-tone
  • Plain colour
  • Stripes or dots or geometrics
  • Bali print
  • Black print on teal
  • White print on teal

ALL SEAMS SHOULD BE 1/4 INCH

PLEASE DO NOT TRIM THE FINISHED BLOCK
even if the edges are uneven.
ALL blocks will be trimmed back to different sizes that will fit the individual quilts being made.

MAKING THE BLOCK

Cut strips of fabric
Teal - cut 1 strip 1 1/2 inch wide x approx. 27 inch long
White - cut 2 strips 1 1/2 inch wide x approx. 27 inch long
Black - cut 1 strip 1 1/2 inch wide x approx. 27 inch long
Black - cut 1 strip 2 1/2 inch wide x approx. 27 inch long

Join strips together in the above order.  Please note that the WIDE BLACK STRIP is on the outside.
Press the seam allowances all to one side.

Cut the block sections
Place the stitched fabric on the cutting mat, along one of the grid lines.  Trim off a small section at the end.  Measure across the fabric.  It should be about 6 - 6 1/2 inch wide.  Using your measurement, cut four squares as shown above.

Layout your block so that all the WIDE BLACK strips are on the OUTSIDE of the block.
Join 2 sections with the stripes running in opposite directions.  Repeat for the remaining two sections.  Press seam allowances to one side.

Layout the two sections of the block and check that the WIDE BLACK strip is still on the outside of the block as above.
Join the two sections together.  Press the seam allowances to one side.

PLEASE DO NOT TRIM THE FINISHED BLOCK
even if the edges are uneven.
ALL blocks will be trimmed back to different sizes that will fit the individual quilts being made.

Please post your finished blocks to

Many, many thanks for participating in this work.
What we're doing really makes a difference as our
amazing Defence Force personnel receive their quilts,
personalised to meet their requests,
knowing that fellow Aussies care about them.

Happy Autumn sewing as the temperatures drop,
and the trees change colour across our wonderful country.

Until next time...

Sandy

  1. I'll do a few as soon as I finish the laundry bag I've promised as I have teal, plus lots of B&W and white, white, W&B (left over from a recent quilt for a family member). Best wishes, Robyn
